Be a part of First Presby’s Pedal with Purpose Fundraiser on Saturday, September 17. Pedal with Purpose, presented by Zenergy Cycling, is a fundraiser to benefit Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley (FIAGKV). This stationary bike “race” is very similar to the walks and runs you may have participated in before, with a significant difference, everyone stays in one place! People of all ages and skill levels, from beginner to pro, can join in this fun, high energy event and raise funds to support the work of Faith in Action. The Faith In Action volunteers assist seniors in our community who want to stay in their own homes but need a helping hand now and then by providing FREE transportation to medical appointments or the grocery store, paying friendly visits, making weekly reassurance phone calls, or deploying a Honey Do Crew to perform minor home maintenance projects. FIAGKV impacts the quality of life of the seniors we serve in Kanawha and Putnam counties every single day. First Presby is looking to form several riding teams. Go to the Faith In Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley website to learn more and to view a video of a Zenergy class. Please notify Sue Webster ASAP if you are interested in participating. It will be a blast for a very good cause.

Geneva Choir for youth and adults will hold it’s first rehearsal of the fall season on Thursday, September 8 from 7:30-9 p.m. in the Choir Room.  Sopranos, altos, tenors, basses, and everyone in between is welcome! No prior experience is required; just a servant heart and a sense of humor.  The Choir Room is located at the top of the stairs above the Susie Early Room.  On Thursday, September 8, a folder, a hymnal, and a new family of friends will be waiting for you!  We’ll give our first anthem to God together on Sunday, September 11.

Fellowship “On the Green”: We need two families to volunteer to host “On the Green” for September 4! To volunteer, sign the board in the hallway by the church office or call the office during the week.

This Week’s Food Pantry Needs:  Spaghetti and Spaghetti Sauce, Canned Soup

LOGOS is right around the corner! Make sure you register your children before our start date of September 7. You can register online at www.firstpresby.com/the-logos-ministry or by completing a paper form that you can find in the main hallway. We would appreciate everyone to be registered by September 1, and all payments due on or before the first night of LOGOS. Hope to see you there!

Thanks to our child care volunteers today in our nursery, toddler and preschool rooms. All child care rooms are equipped with live video feeds of the worship service. If you love children and babies call the church office, (304)343-8961, to volunteer in this special ministry.

More about the music: We now have an important new resource, a volume of research on every tune and text in our hymnal written by the Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D. entitled, Glory to God: A Companion.  This book contains extended articles about each text and tune in our hymnal. Here’s an excerpt from the about this morning’s final hymn text, “O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing:”

“These five stanzas were among the eighteen CM quatrains that formed the hymn headed, “For the Anniversary of One’s Conversion” in [Hymns and Sacred Poems (London, 1740.]  The present selection of stanzas corresponds to stanzas 7, 9, 11, 8, and 1 of the original printing…The practice of using the present first stanza to open this hymn can be traced back at least as far as Hymns and Spiritual Songs (London, 1753), a book John Wesley prepared for the Methodist societies.

For more fun tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of the Companion in our church library or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

Traveling this summer? Keep in touch with your church family several ways. You can participate in Sunday worship – the service is broadcast on the WCHS 580AM radio website at 11:00 a.m. Check out our website, http://firstpresby.com/ to read the weekly announcements and the bulletin, download past sermons to listen at your convenience. You can log in to the website as a member and set up a recurring gift directly from your checking account or credit card to continue supporting your church ministries while away. Members can also find contact info for other church family members in the member portal. Find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/FirstPresbyCharleston to see photos of the latest happenings. Stay in touch this summer- we’ll miss you when you’re not here!

The FPC Lyres Club is in Huntington today, playing for worship at Highlawn Presbyterian Church this morning and at Hospice of Huntington this afternoon.  Please pray for our safe travels and that our offerings will be pleasing to God and uplifting to God’s people today.

Flood Relief Work Day:  First Presby is planning a flood relief work day in the Elkview-Clendenin area for Saturday, August 27.  Tentatively meet at FPC at 7:30 a.m., on August 27 with tools and lunch.  Expect to return at 4:30 or so. We will probably be in the Russell Underwood house completing the sheetrock and tape and mudding in the two rooms we completed on July 30.  If you are interested in being a part of this work crew, please notify Sue Webster at sue@firstpresby.com or 304-343-8961 Ext. 139 on or before Thursday, August 25, so we can gauge the crew size and get a specific assignment. Then we’ll know the specific tools/equipment needed to complete our task and be able to provide you with full details.  This work is challenging but also very rewarding – be a part of the team!

Look for the big map on the bulletin board in the hallway! Whenever you travel, bring home a bulletin from the churches you visit, and we’ll “map” you on the board. By the end of the summer, our board will be full, and we’ll be connected to brothers and sisters all over the world! Leave your travel bulletins in the church office, and be sure to include your name!

Bob Newman’s mother’s original paintings are on display, extended through August 23 in the Ruffner Room.  This is Bob’s way to celebrate his birthday this week by sharing the talents of his mom and her influence upon his life, with thanksgiving to Almighty God.  Drop in and admire her work anytime the Ruffner Room is open.

Sojourner’s Class continues: Dr. Jodi Magness gives her sixth lecture this week on the overall topic “Jesus and His Jewish Influences.”  After the Babylonian Exile, many Jews did not return to Judea but continued to live elsewhere, called the Diaspora, or the dispersion of the Jews from their homeland to other lands, such as Assyria, Babylonia, Persia, and Egypt.  The meaning of the Golden Rule became problematic, especially how to love your neighbor and your enemy.  These discussions continued into the time of Jesus and we read his version of this dilemma in the Gospels.  Everyone is invited and welcome to learn and enjoy these lively discussions.  Sundays, 9:15 a.m., Education Bldg. Room 411.

Cents-Ability Offering Received next Sunday:  The Cents-Ability Offering is a small first step in the battle against hunger and poverty.  Members of all ages are invited to contribute a few cents at every meal.  This simple act is an expression of thanks for what we have received.  It is also a commitment to share with others in response to Jesus’ command “You give them something to eat.”  When members bring their offerings to church on Cents-Ability Sunday, all of those coins “make a joyful noise unto the Lord” as they are received and dedicated.
