Children’s Bible Study (formerly Second Hour Bible Study)- Following Time with Young Disciples and the Passing of the Peace, all children in grades 1-5 are invited to join us for Bible Study in room E-113. Janet Chambers will walk the children to their classroom. If this is your child’s first time visiting Children’s Bible Study, please accompany them to the room so that you can sign them in and get acquainted with our teachers.

LOGOS is right around the corner! Make sure you register your children before our start date of September 7. You can register online at www.firstpresby.com/the-logos-ministry or by completing a paper form that you can find in the main hallway. We would appreciate everyone to be registered by September 1, and all payments due on or before the first night of LOGOS. Hope to see you there!

Cents-Ability Offering Received today: The Cents-Ability Offering is a small first step in the battle against hunger and poverty.  Members of all ages are invited to contribute a few cents at every meal.  This simple act is an expression of thanks for what we have received.  It is also a commitment to share with others in response to Jesus’ command “You give them something to eat.”  When members bring their offerings to church on Cents-Ability Sunday, all of those coins “make a joyful noise unto the Lord” as they are received and dedicated.

More about the music: We now have an important new resource, a volume of research on every tune and text in our hymnal written by the Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D. entitled, Glory to God: A Companion.  This book contains extended articles about each text and tune in our hymnal. Here’s an excerpt from the about this morning’s concluding hymn text, “When Peace Like a River:”
“Hymns have often emerged from experiences of grief, but few such circumstances are as poignant as the occasion for this text.  The author, a successful Chicago lawyer and active Presbyterian layman, was about to sail to France for a vacation with his family, but he was detained at the last minute by business matters.  His wife and four daughters went ahead as scheduled, with the understanding that he would join them shortly.  At 2 a.m. on November 22, 1873, their ship, the Ville du Havre [hence the tune name], was struck by the British ship Loch Earn and (according to newspaper accounts) sank in fifteen minutes, with the loss of 226 lives.  Mrs. Spafford was among the eighty-seven survivors, but all four of their daughters were lost.  When she finally reached land more than a week later, she sent her husband a telegram that began, ‘Saved alone.’  He immediately set off to join her in Paris…While at sea, somewhere near the site of the fatal accident, he is said by family tradition to have written this hymn.”

For more fun tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of the Companion in our church library or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

Fellowship “On the Green”: We need two families to volunteer to host “On the Green” for September 4! To volunteer, sign the board in the hallway by the church office or call the office during the week.

Thanks to our child care volunteers today in our nursery, toddler and preschool rooms. All child care rooms are equipped with live video feeds of the worship service. If you love children and babies call the church office, (304)343-8961, to volunteer in this special ministry.

Please pray for the FPC Lyres Club as we minister in music to the residents of Eastbrook Nursing Care Center this Tuesday, August 30.  Gig Sheet 100 has been emailed to all harp players; hard copies are on the table in the hallway.

Geneva Choir for youth and adults will hold our first rehearsal of the fall season on Thursday, September 8 from 7:30-9 p.m. in the Choir Room.  Sopranos, altos, tenors, basses, and everyone in between is welcome! No prior experience is required; just a servant heart and a sense of humor.  The Choir Room is located at the top of the stairs above the Susie Early Room.  On Thursday, September 8, a folder, a hymnal, and a new family of friends will be waiting for you!  We’ll give our first anthem to God together on Sunday morning, September 11.

Look for the big map on the bulletin board in the hallway! Whenever you travel, bring home a bulletin from the churches you visit, and we’ll “map” you on the board. By the end of the summer, our board will be full, and we’ll be connected to brothers and sisters all over the world! Leave your travel bulletins in the church office, and be sure to include your name.

Knitting group: We continue to make scarves and hats for flood victims.  All are welcomed to join us, even if you can’t attend our gatherings.  Our meetings are September 6, at 6:00 p.m. and September 20, at 10:00 a.m., both in Room 406 in the Education Building.  Contact Laura Ceperley 304-389-3562.

Local Mission Grant Applications: Through the very generous pledge and plate offerings by you, the First Presbyterian Congregation, local mission outreach grant requests are able to be funded annually.  First Presby has a very long and rich history of supporting local non-profit agencies/organizations that work to promote a better quality of life for those in need in our community. The grant process is such that local/state agencies submit their application to First Presby’s Mission Division.  A subcommittee of the Mission Division reviews the grants following a best practices set of guidelines and makes recommendation to Session regarding funding. If you know of or have an association with a 501c3 organization that would qualify to submit a grant application, please make them aware of this opportunity. The grant applications for 2017 funding will be available in the church hallway on the information table beginning September 1 and/or online at www.firstpresby.com.  All applications are due on or before September 30, 2016.  Please contact Sue Webster if you have any questions. Thank you.

Minute-Maid lemonade, Fuze sweet tea, Dasani water, Powerade, Coke and Diet Coke are available in 20 oz. bottles for $1.25. Additionally, 12 oz. cans of Coke, Diet Coke and Sprite are available in the machine upstairs in the Choir Room for 75¢.

Sojourner’s Class continues: Dr. Jodi Magness gives her seventh lecture this week on the overall topic “Jesus and His Jewish Influences.”  Her topic this week is “Alexander the Great’s Impact on the Jews.” After the death of his father, Philip of Macedon, Alexander became ruler of all Greece and soon was pushing his rule eastward, eventually to conquer Persia and reach India.  He died at age 33 (323BCE) and his empire was divided among his generals.  They soon ruled all of the Jewish territories all the way to Egypt.  The influence of Greek or Hellenistic culture upon the Jews was powerful but also hard to measure.  Dr. Magness examines how this influence prepared the way for the Jews to deal with the career of Jesus in  new and adventurous ways.  Everyone is invited and welcome to learn and enjoy these lively discussions on Sundays, at 9:15 a.m., in the Education Bldg. room 411.

As you pray, please remember: Tony Fowler, brother of Tammy Hovis; Lynne McChesney Knight; Tom McCune, brother-in-law of Joe Zando; Cindy McDowell, niece of Lynda Strickland; Christina McClure, sister-in-law of Vannessa McClure, church secretary; Richard Howard; David Dobish, friend of Bill McCoy; Travis Eads, son of Debbie and Bryan Eads; Bob and Nancy Douglas; Denise Baker, daughter-in-law of Joyce and Eddie Baker; Leroy Justice; Ken Volkers; Zeta Young, friend of the Hopes; John Nelson; Vann Carrol, member of KUPC; Kathleen Roberts, sister-in-law of Diane and Jim Roberts; Lee Bivens; Larry Miller.
