This morning we welcome the Family Choir to worship leadership for the last time this summer.  On Family Choir Sundays, we meet in the Choir Room at 9:30 a.m. to learn the anthem for 10:30 a.m. worship, and all ages are welcome to join us.  The Family Choir will return next summer, so watch this space in the spring for your next chance to join us!

This Week’s Food Pantry Needs:  Spaghetti and Spaghetti Sauce, Canned Soup

Be a part of First Presby’s Pedal with Purpose Fundraiser on Saturday, September 17. Pedal with Purpose, presented by Zenergy Cycling, is a fundraiser to benefit Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley (FIAGKV). This stationary bike “race” is very similar to the walks and runs you may have participated in before, with a significant difference, everyone stays in one place! People of all ages and skill levels, from beginner to pro, can join in this fun, high energy event and raise funds to support the work of Faith in Action. The Faith In Action volunteers assist seniors in our community who want to stay in their own homes but need a helping hand now and then by providing FREE transportation to medical appointments or the grocery store, paying friendly visits, making weekly reassurance phone calls, or deploying a Honey Do Crew to perform minor home maintenance projects. FIAGKV impacts the quality of life of the seniors we serve in Kanawha and Putnam counties every single day. First Presby is looking to form several riding teams. Go to the Faith In Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley website to learn more and to view a video of a Zenergy class. Please notify Sue Webster ASAP if you are interested in participating. It will be a blast for a very good cause.

Thanks to our child care volunteers today in our nursery, toddler and preschool rooms. All child care rooms are equipped with live video feeds of the worship service. If you love children and babies call the church office, (304)343-8961, to volunteer in this special ministry.

More about the music: We now have an important new resource, a volume of research on every tune and text in our hymnal written by the Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D. entitled, Glory to God: A Companion.  This book contains extended articles about each text and tune in our hymnal. Here’s an excerpt from the about this morning’s final hymn text, “O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing:”

“These five stanzas were among the eighteen CM quatrains that formed the hymn headed, “For the Anniversary of One’s Conversion” in [Hymns and Sacred Poems (London, 1740.]  The present selection of stanzas corresponds to stanzas 7, 9, 11, 8, and 1 of the original printing…The practice of using the present first stanza to open this hymn can be traced back at least as far as Hymns and Spiritual Songs (London, 1753), a book John Wesley prepared for the Methodist societies.

For more fun tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of the Companion in our church library or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

Please pray for the FPC Lyres Club as we minister in music to the families at Hubbard Hospice this Tuesday, August 16.  Gig Sheet 97 has been emailed to all harp players; hard copies are on the table in the hallway.

Knitting and Crocheting- The knitting and crocheting group will be meeting on August 16, at 10:00 a.m., in room E-406. For more information, please contact Laura Ceperley.

Sojourner’s Class continues: Dr. Jodi Magness  gives her fifth lecture this week to Sojourners Class on the overall topic “Jesus and His Jewish Influences.”  She discusses the return of the Jews from Babylon to Judah and the rebuilding of the temple.  Should the revitalized Jewish people be inclusive or exclusive?  What about the Samaritans, or the twelve lost tribes, who have intermarried with foreigners? This leads to the Gospel stories of “The Good Samaritan” and “Jesus and the Woman at the Well.”  Everyone invited and welcome to learn and enjoy these lively discussions.  Sundays, 9:15am, Education Bldg. 411.

Traveling this summer? Keep in touch with your church family several ways. You can participate in Sunday worship – the service is broadcast on the WCHS 580AM radio website at 11:00 a.m. Check out our website, http://firstpresby.com/ to read the weekly announcements and the bulletin, download past sermons to listen at your convenience. You can log in to the website as a member and set up a recurring gift directly from your checking account or credit card to continue supporting your church ministries while away. Members can also find contact info for other church family members in the member portal. Find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/FirstPresbyCharleston to see photos of the latest happenings. Stay in touch this summer- we’ll miss you when you’re not here!

“On the Green” Family Sign-ups: We are trying something new for our “Fellowship on the Green” after worship this summer. Our usual small groups–classes and divisions–will cover fewer Sundays for bringing refreshments. This will allow 2 or 3 families to participate together on a Sunday of their choice. Sign up on the poster in the hall or call the office to share being the hosts of “On the Green” this summer. Instructions are included. Open Sundays are September 4 and 11. There is availability on August 28 for an additional family to help out the family that has already signed up. Please take advantage of this new opportunity to share in the hospitality of First Presby this summer.

Look for the big map on the bulletin board in the hallway! Whenever you travel, bring home a bulletin from the churches you visit, and we’ll “map” you on the board. By the end of the summer, our board will be full, and we’ll be connected to brothers and sisters all over the world! Leave your travel bulletins in the church office, and be sure to include your name!

Bob Newman is celebrating his birthday this week and invites everyone to share an exhibit of his mother’s original paintings.  They will be on exhibit seven days, Monday, August 15 through Sunday, August 21 in the Ruffner Room.  Drop in and help Bob celebrate whenever the Ruffner Room is open and available.  For more information, please contact Bob, (304) 345-0225, or the Church Office,
(304) 343-8961.

LOGOS is right around the corner! Make sure you register your children before our start date of September 7. You can register online at www.firstpresby.com/the-logos-ministry or by completing a paper form that you can find in the main hallway. We would appreciate everyone to be registered by September 1, and all payments due on or before the first night of LOGOS. Hope to see you there!
