Today is Consecration Sunday! Together we will pledge a portion of our income to carry on our ministries here at First Presbyterian Church. These offerings feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, provide a safe haven to the abused and give hope to lives destroyed by fire and flood. We spread the Gospel by living the Gospel. We as a congregation are called to freely give. How will we respond?

Tell us what you’re thankful for! Be sure to stop by the “I’m Thankful For” bulletin board in the hall to fill out a leaf stating what you’re thankful for. As Thanksgiving approaches, let’s take time to thank God for all the many blessings He has given us!

Help us Help Houston flood victims: First Presby has adopted a “Sister Church’ – 1st Presbyterian Church of Dickinson, Texas that was completely devastated by Hurricane Harvey. We have the opportunity to help them rebuild and refurbish! They are in need of new chairs for their sanctuary. You have the opportunity to help by way of “sponsoring a chair”. See the bulletin board in the church hallway and/or make a donation to this outreach ministry by way of check made out to First Presby, notate Dickinson Chairs.

This Week’s Food Pantry Needs: Hamburger Helper meals & instant mashed potatoes

There’s room in the Geneva Choir for you! Music literacy and perfect attendance are not required, but a sense of humor is certainly helpful. The choir does have a few people with great solo voices, but most of us are just regular folks like you. Much like the summer Family Choir, we’re a slightly different combination every week, but God needs all of us! Come to rehearsal this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Choir Room and join your voice with ours as often as you are able.

Lay Academy meets today at 4:00 p.m. in the Dining Room, to continue studying comparative religions in East Asia. Dr. Mark Berkson will lecture (DVD) on Japanese history and spiritual resources, including Shinto and Buddhism. Dr. Newman will discuss East Asia as a whole and how the growth of Globalization challenges us all to work for world peace. We will also discuss the growth of Christianity in China. Everyone is welcome to attend. For more information, please contact Dr. Newman at 304-345-0225 or the Church Office at 304-343-8961.

More About the Music: More about the music: Contrary to popular belief, the tune for this morning’s opening hymn, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,” was never sung in a bar, and it was not based on a popular song of its day. Below is an excerpt from Glory to God: A Companion about the great reformer Martin Luther’s original tune, “Ein’ Feste Burg:” “Although numerous suggestions have been made for melody sources (plainchant, psalm tunes, a French chanson, Hans Sach’s ‘Silberweise’), no convincing precedent has been found. Given his known musical abilities, it seems reasonable to assume that Luther did indeed write his own tune for this text, using familiar rhythmic and melodic patterns accessible for congregational singing. One measure of his skillfulness is the survival of his tune despite all the changes it has undergone as the result of shifts in musical taste. The Presbyterian version, for example, has some measures that have remained unaltered since the 1895/1911 hymnal, and some from 1933, with everything reaching the present form in the Hymnbook (1955). Although it seeks to perpetuate the spirit of Bach’s treatment of this chorale in his Cantata no. 80, it is not directly taken from that work.” For more tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of “Glory to God: A Companion” by Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D in our church library, or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

Youth: Today the Youth Group will attend Christian Johnson’s Installation at 4:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary.

Lay Academy will not meet today. Everyone invited to participate in the Service of Installation for Christian Johnson at 4:00 p.m.

Many ways to support our ministries: In addition to traditional cash and checks in the offering plate, you can give on our website www.firstpresby.com via your computer or smart phone, through our mobile app “Church Life” (you must first set up a user profile on our website to use the Church Life app.) or by texting 73256 and typing “firstpresby” in the message line. Use the QR code card in your pew rack to go directly to our giving page. God loves a Cheerful Giver.
