Many Ways to Support our Ministries: In addition to traditional cash and checks in the offering plate, you can give on our website firstpresby.com via your computer or smart phone, through our mobile app “Church Life” (you must first set up a user profile on our website to use the Church Life app.) or by texting 73256 and typing “firstpresby” in the message line. Use the QR code card in your pew rack to go directly to our giving page. God loves a Cheerful Giver.

Local Mission Grant Applications: Through the very generous pledge and plate offerings by you, the First Presbyterian Congregation, local mission outreach grant requests are able to be funded annually.  First Presby has a very long and rich history of supporting local non-profit agencies/organizations that work to promote a better quality of life for those in need in our community. The grant process is such that local/state agencies submit their application to First Presby’s Mission Division.  A subcommittee of the Mission Division reviews the grants following a best practices set of guidelines and makes recommendation to Session regarding funding. If you know of or have an association with a 501c3 organization that would qualify to submit a grant application, please make them aware of this opportunity. The grant applications for 2018 funding will be available in the church hallway on the information table beginning September 1 and/or online at www.firstpresby.com.  All applications are due on or before Friday, September 29, 2017.  Please contact Sue Webster if you have any questions.

We all face challenges in our lives, today, and some have immediate, great needs. So they approach us, as good Christians, since they know we will give! From time to time, we like to remind our congregation that many people who come to us may already be receiving institutional help, from First Presby and other organizations. To this end, we would ask that if anyone comes to you for emotional or spiritual, and especially financial help you would refer them to our pastoral staff, especially to the Associate Pastor, currently Doug Jenkins. There are cards available on the Community Ministry table in the hallway outside the sanctuary which you can offer anyone which lists contact information. God bless, Pastoral Staff at First Presby.

Geneva Choir will hold our first rehearsal of the fall season this Thursday, September 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Choir Room.  Music literacy and perfect attendance are not required, but a sense of humor is certainly helpful.  God needs singers of all voice types, and you will receive the gift of community among other joyful singers in the the Choir Room, located at the top of the stairs and above the Ruffner Room.  We’ll give our first anthem to God together on Sunday morning, September 10.

More about the Music: Below is an excerpt from “Glory to God: A Companion” about this morning’s Hymn of Praise, “Seek Ye First”: “This text is one of the classic examples of the 20th-century trend of setting Scripture to music, and it arose from circumstances strongly connected with its content.  While in the midst of her own financial crisis in 1971, the author attended a Bible study one evening in her home church, Calvary Chapel, Costa Mesa, California.  The focus was on Matthew 6:33, the basis for this song.  When she returned home with that verse very much on her mind, she picked up her guitar and gradually developed the tune that has become identified with these words. The additional stanzas have arisen anonymously from people who have wanted to extend this text.” For more tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of “Glory to God: A Companion” by Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D in our church library, or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

The LAY ACADEMY begins new study sessions on “Comparative Religions,” today,  starting with study of the Primal Religions, the oldest and still practiced of all human religions.  For example, the Native Americans seek to keep alive their ancient, pre-historic traditions when they are under pressure to switch to Modern ideas and ways of living.  What can we learn from their Spirituality which helps us to honor and respect them as our neighbors and also helps us better to understand our own Religion?  Dr. Robert G. Newman will be the primary lecturer in this series, and he will share what he learned living and working in Alaska, getting to know Native Americans better. He will have help from time to time from guest speakers from the different religions here in greater Charleston.  This series meets at 4:00 p.m., every Sunday through December 17 in the Dining Room. This series is free and open to everyone. Even the textbook is free.  For more information, please call the church office 304- 343-8961, or Dr. Newman 304-345-0225.

Hurricane Harvey Assistance: Our prayers and our thoughts are with all of the people affected by Hurricane Harvey. Once again our hearts are broken by the incredible destruction caused by a hurricane. We are especially concerned for our members and our members’ churches. There are numerous ways to provide support. Gifts can be given through the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance by using the following link:  http://pcusa.org/situation/tropical-storm-harvey/ or you can mail a check to Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), P.O. Box 643700, Pittsburgh, PA 15264-3700 designating for DR000169-Harvey.

Church League Basketball: Attendance for Church League Basketball begins in September. Eligibility to play requires attendance at Church, Sunday School, Youth Group and/or LOGOS at least twice a month on different days. If your student is interested in playing, or you are interested in coaching/helping please send Payne Warner an email at youth@firstpresby.com.

Youth Group: No youth group tonight due to the long weekend and the WVU football game.

The FPC Lyres Club thanks you for your participation through prayer in our musical outreach ministries this summer. With your support, we travelled to visit and play our harps at Hubbard Hospice House (three times), Charleston Gardens, Oak Ridge Nursing Care Center, Woodlands of Huntington, Eastbrook Nursing Care Center, Kanawha Place (formerly Quarry Manor), and Hospice of Huntington. We will resume our work together in the Ruffner Room this Tuesday, September 5 at 5:30 p.m.
