Many Ways to Support our Ministries: In addition to traditional cash and checks in the offering plate, you can give on our website firstpresby.com via your computer or smart phone, through our mobile app “Church Life” (you must first set up a user profile on our website to use the Church Life app.) or by texting 73256 and typing “firstpresby” in the message line. Use the QR code card in your pew rack to go directly to our giving page. God loves a Cheerful Giver.

Our Parish Nurses will be providing blood pressure checks in the Cablish Room following worship service today. This ministry is available to everyone.

Local Mission Grant Applications: Through the very generous pledge and plate offerings given by you, the First Presbyterian Congregation, local mission outreach grant requests are able to be funded annually. First Presby has a very long and rich history of supporting local non-profit agencies/organizations that work to promote a better quality of life for those in need in our community. The grant process is such that local/state agencies submit their application to First Presby’s Mission Division.  A subcommittee of the Mission Division reviews the grants following a best practices set of guidelines and makes recommendation to Session regarding funding. If you know of or have an association with a 501c3 organization that would qualify to submit a grant application, please make them aware of this opportunity. The grant applications for 2018 funding will be available in the church hallway on the information table beginning September 1 and/or online at www.firstpresby.com.  All applications are due on or before Friday, September 29, 2017.  Please contact Sue Webster if you have any questions.

The LAY ACADEMY continues to study “Comparative Religions,” today at 4:00 p.m.in the Dining Room. We continue to examine The Primal Religions, such as our own Native American tribes. Dr. Newman leads discussion of his time spent with Native Americans in Alaska and we shall travel to Nigeria (DVD) to share worship with a Yoruba community as they practice a primal religion still active today. Free and everyone welcome. Even the textbook is free. Bring a friend or neighbor. For more information, please contact the Church Office, 304-343-8961, or Dr. Newman 304-345-0225.

This Week’s Food Pantry Needs: Peanut Butter & Cereal.

Youth Group: No youth group tonight due to the picnic.

Geneva Choir: There’s room in the Geneva Choir for you!  Music literacy and perfect attendance are not required, but a sense of humor is certainly helpful.  God needs singers of all voice types and levels of experience; come to rehearsal this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Choir Room and see what you’re missing!

More About the Music: Below is an excerpt from “Glory to God: A Companion” about this morning’s final hymn, “We Are One in the Spirit”: “This hymn of Christian unity was written in 1966 while the author was a Catholic parish priest at St. Bernard’s on the South Side of Chicago. At the time, he was leading a youth choir that met in the church basement and was looking for something appropriate for them to sing at a series of ecumenical and interracial events. When he couldn’t find such a song, he wrote this one in a single day. It became immensely popular and is often described as “the anthem of the Jesus movement.” For more tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of “Glory to God: A Companion” by Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D in our church library, or look trough the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

Meet Our New Director of Communications! Laura Hedrick is a dedicated communications professional from Pinch, WV. A verse she lives by is Psalm 46:5 “God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.”
