 Congratulations to:

  • Kelly & Chris Weikle on the birth of Landon Arlo Weikle, on June 26, in Charleston. Landon joins sister, Ainsley. Grandparents are Jeri and Danny Matheny.

 Sympathy of the Congregation is extended to Linda Elliott and family on the death of her sister, Ginger Monk, in Elkins on June 30.

Next Week’s Sermon will be given by Doug Jenkins. Sermon text: Jonah Chapters 1-2.

Many Ways to Support our Ministries: In addition to traditional cash and checks in the offering plate, you can give on our website firstpresby.com via your computer or smart phone, through our mobile app “Church Life” (you must first set up a user profile on our website to use the Church Life app.) or by texting 73256 and typing “firstpresby” in the message line. Use the QR code card in your pew rack to go directly to our giving page. God loves a Cheerful Giver.

Our Parish Nurses will be providing blood pressure checks in the Cablish Room following worship service. This ministry is available to everyone.

Jonah Series: Rev. Doug will have a two week sermon series on Jonah starting on Sunday, July 16, Scripture: Jonah Chapters 1-2. Second sermon will be on Sunday, July 23, Scripture: Jonah, Chapters 3-4. God told Jonah to go to Nineveh to preach salvation. Nineveh is in our modern Iraq. Would we be as reticent to go there as Jonah???

 “Art Camp with Janet Chambers” began last week with 11 beautiful artists! The room was filled with middle school students. We painted every day and had a great time at the Huntington Museum of Art. The day at the museum included a nature hike, lunch, art project, and a tour of the museum beautiful exhibits. The next days were spent drawing and painting on canvas. We were blessed with many opportunities to God all around us in our talented and art-filled world. I would like to thank Jackie Lilly for driving the bus to the museum. It was a fantastic week, I am blessed with so many talented young people, it was a joy to work with each one of them. Thanks be to God.

Please check out the photos of the children’s art work in the hallway. Next week will be the Adult Art Camp. Please call Janet Chambers, if you have any questions. (304) 343-8961

Welcome Family Choir: This morning, we welcome the Family Choir to worship leadership. On Family Choir Sundays, we meet in the Choir Room at 9:30 to prepare the anthem for the day.  We’re a different choir each time, determined by the people who are in town each Sunday we sing.  After today, you’ll have just one more opportunity to sing in the Family Choir: next Sunday, July 16.  Mark your calendar and plan to join us!  All ages are welcome.

This Week’s Food Pantry Needs: Peanut Butter

More About the Music: Below is an excerpt from “Glory to God: A Companion” about this morning’s opening hymn, “Standing on the Promises”: “In its original printing (‘Songs of Perfect Love,’ Philadelphia, 1886), this gospel song had an additional stanza that followed the present second one: ‘Standing on the promises I now can see/Perfect present cleansing in the blood for me/Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free/Standing on the promises of God.’ Part of the problem in attempting to detect biblical allusions is the core phrase ‘standing on the promises of God.’ The phrase ‘promises of God’ appears in 2 Corinthians 1:20 and Galatians 3:21, but in both places it lacks a clear referent. In fact, an effort to identify all the divine promises in Scripture has found more than 3,500. A few possible biblical phrases do emerge: 1 Peter 4:11, Luke 2:14, Deuteronomy 31:6, Hebrews 4:12, Ephesians 6:17, and 1 Corinthians 15:28.” For more tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of “Glory to God: A Companion” by Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D in our church library, or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

Please pray for the FPC Lyres Club as we minister in music to the families at Hubbard Hospice House this Tuesday evening, July 11.  Gig Sheet 106 has been emailed to all harp players.

 Traveling This Summer?  Take a First Presby greeting card with you to drop into the offering plate of the churches you visit; cards are available in the office or at the bulletin board in the hallway.  Bring home a worship bulletin, leave it in the church office (be sure to include your name!), and we’ll “map” you on the bulletin board in the hallway. Soon we’ll be connected through worship to brothers and sisters all over the world!

 Support Youth Mission Trips with the upcoming Fellowship Breakfast on July 16. The menu is eggs, bacon, hash brown casserole, and fresh fruit. Please join us at 9:15 a.m. in the Dining Room to join in together and support our youth.

Walking Community! Join us for a weekly walk on Mondays at 5:30 p.m. We meet in the parking lot by the activities building for a one hour walk and time of fellowship. If the weather is good we walk outside, and if the weather is not so good, we walk in the Activities Building. This is a great way to jump start your week with some exercise and time for reflection. But we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever. Micah 4:5.

First Presby Poetry Sharing Continues:  Do you write your own poetry? You probably feel and/or think your strongest, deepest, sharpest, most serious ideas in the quiet, solitude of your mind, whether or not you put them in writing or share them in conversation. Or, maybe you find your ideas in what others say or write. For example, the words of Jesus, or the prophet Isaiah, or David the psalmist or Paul the apostle may capture ideas you agree with. Come, share your serious ideas, wherever you get them from. We meet Wednesdays from 5:30-7:00 p.m. in Room 203 in the Activities Building. Everyone invited. Bring a friend or neighbor. For more information, please contact the Church Office, (304) 343-8965.

Live on the Levee Tailgate: Please join us for a tailgate in the church parking lot prior to Live on the Levee on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month. July dates are Friday, July 7 and Friday, July 21. Food will be served around 5:45 p.m. Fellowship & Recreation will provide hot dogs, chips, cookies, water and lemonade. If you want to bring anything to throw on the grill or share, please do so. This is a tailgate, so bring a chair and join us. We will have a corn hole set and ladder ball for activities.

 Presbyterian Coffee Project: Coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolates, raisins, and nuts continue to be available for purchase after worship and the week days during church business hours.

 Thanks to Our Child Care Volunteers today in our nursery, toddler and preschool rooms. All child care rooms are equipped with live video feeds of the worship service. Do you love children and babies? Call the church office, 304-343-8961, to volunteer in this special ministry.

Art Sale: The estate of Betty and Ken Volkers will be having art sale of Betty Volker’s Originals in the dining room of First Presby on Wednesday July 12, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Everyone invited.

 The Urgent Needs Offering is Received Next Sunday, July 16: Twice a year our congregation has an opportunity to give to the Urgent Needs Offering. A portion of the offering goes directly to the Emergency Assistance Program operated by Covenant House to be able to provide rent, utilities, travel, medicine, clothing or food for people in the Kanawha Valley who are in a crisis situation. A small portion remains here at First Presby to provide assistance to our families experiencing these same difficulties.

Tasty Tuesday – Summer 2017!  During the summer months, members of First Presby serve dinner to those who may be hungry in our community.  Tasty Tuesday for July is scheduled for July 18. This is a multi-generational event and all congregation members are encouraged to get involved by way of preparing or purchasing food, serving, cleanup, or just by coming to enjoy dinner and fellowship with our brothers and sister of the community. This is a wonderful evening of fellowship, food, and fun! Spaghetti dinner, salad, garlic bread & dessert is the menu. You can sign up to help outside the church office after worship today. ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

 Worship Notes:  Do you know the “secret code” for our worship bulletins each Sunday?

Here’s the key:

Regular typeface—worship aids;

Bold typeface—what you say aloud;

Bold italics—what you sing

On the right side of each page,

Regular typeface—the name of the person leading that element

Italics—the name of the person who wrote the music

Small Capitals—the name of the hymn tune

If any heading is preceded by an asterisk [*HYMN] you may stand.
