First Presby’s WWeekly News March 12, 2017 2nd Sunday in Lent

Sunday Worship 10:30 a.m.

Worship is broadcast at 11:00 a.m. on WCHS-580AM

304-343-8961

The cross on the chancel is made from three Christmas trees. It symbolizes the connection between cradle and cross as we celebrate the gift of God’s Son and His sacrifice for our salvation.

Next Week’s Sermon is “Accept One Another” by Bill McCoy. Epistle Lesson: Romans 15:7-13.

THE Lay Academy continues to study “The Addictive Brain,” with lectures (DVD) by Dr. Thad Polk. Dr. Polk shows how Psychology and Neuro-Science work together to discover how the human brain learns to cope with daily stresses and strains, seeking pleasure and reward for problem-solving behavior. Then Dr. Polk shows how use and abuse of substances leads to addiction, which in effect hijacks the brain, producing behavioral symptoms such as tolerance, withdrawal, and dependence as a result of changes that occur in the brain. Questions/answers/discussion encouraged.  We meet on Sundays from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in the dining room. For more information, please call the church office, (304) 343-8961.

Our Parish Nurses will be providing blood pressure checks in the Cablish Room following worship service today. This ministry is available to everyone.

Lenten Memorials:  Envelopes are in the pew racks for contributions to our Worship Memorial Fund in honor or memory of loved ones. Names will be printed in a special insert for the Easter worship bulletins. The deadline for submission is April 9. These Lenten Memorials are given to enrich worship at the church.

The March Luncheon of Presbyterian Women will be held on Thursday, March 16, in the church dining room.  The program will be a special presentation of the Ecumenical Dancers. Deadline for reservations is Monday, March 13. Call your Circle leader or the church office at 304-343-8961. ALL Presbyterian Women are invited.

Church Breakfast! Please join the Fellowship & Recreation, Mission, and Christian Education Divisions for a farm breakfast on March 19 to celebrate and learn about Children for Chicks. During the Season of Lent the Covenant Kids are collecting money in order to purchase chickens for families in need. We will have a farm themed breakfast and hear ways that we can support this Lenten Mission. Breakfast will be served in the dining room from 8:30-9:15 a.m. Contributions are appreciated-please contact Payne Warner at the church office.

Sojourners’ Class has begun a new series of studies on Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m, in Room 411 in the Education Building. This new study series is called “Painting the Stars” and explores the promise of evolutionary Christian spirituality, investigating how our faith can grow when we are open and willing to listen for new wisdom and guidance from the Spirit who invites us to step out into new surprising and exciting dimensions of love for God and each other. These lessons will help us to support the work of our Session’s Strategic Planning Group. Everyone is invited and welcome to share these learning experiences.

Youth will meet tonight from 6:00-8:30 p.m. in the Dining Room.

This Week’s Food Pantry Needs: Pasta Products

Children for Chicks Challenge!  Our Elementary age children are participating in a mission outreach project that we have termed, Children for Chicks Challenge!  During the Lenten season, the children will bring their offerings to Chapel time on Sunday mornings and work together to collect funds to buy a family of chickens for as many families in need as possible.  A high-producing chicken can lay up to one egg every day.  The gift of chickens helps a family have a reliable source of food that they might not otherwise have.  One family of chickens costs $25.00, individual chicks cost $5.00 each.  We are encouraging our entire congregation to support the children in their giving.  Next Sunday, March 19, you will learn more about this effort at the church-wide Fellowship and Recreation Country Breakfast and during a special minute for mission in worship.  You will have an opportunity to participate in the children’s fundraising efforts as they will be on-hand after worship service next Sunday to receive your donation for the Children For Chicks Challenge. Additionally, all congregation members can stop by the Children For Chicks Challenge bulletin board in the main church hallway and select a chick to purchase.  Simply pick your Chick and attach it to the bulletin board. Then, using the envelopes provided on the bulletin board, bring your donation to the front office.  On a weekly basis, chicks will be added to the bulletin board based on the amount of funds received.  Our Challenge it to fill the board with Chicks!!  All funds received will be sent to PC(USA) to enable world mission to purchase a family of chicks for families in-need of nutrition.  Let us all do our part to help our children help their brothers and sisters throughout the world.

Covenant House Chef’s Challenge tickets are still available.  Support the tremendous work of the Covenant House by purchasing your ticket to attend this Tuesday, March 14, 5:30-8:00 p.m. at the Charleston Civic Center. Seven local chefs will be stepping onto one of Charleston’s most popular culinary stages.  Chefs donate their time, ingredients and resources to jointly prepare a five-course meal for the event. This year’s menu features “new Appalachian cuisine,” and the event will include live music, local wine and craft beer, and a silent auction.  Covenant House aims to act as a safe haven, advocate and safety net for those facing a crisis such as homelessness, eviction or hunger. Tickets for Chef’s Challenge are $100 per person and can be purchased online at wvcovenanthouse.org/events/chefs-challenge or call Angie at (304) 344-8053 Ext 22.

More about the Music: Here’s an excerpt from Glory to God: A Companion about this morning’s final hymn, “Spirit”:  “The first three stanzas of this text were written in 1975 while the author was a chaplain at a boarding school in Hawaii. The fourth stanza was written the following year, along with the tune, in response to a suggestion from a choir member at Waiokeola Congregational Church in Honolulu, where the hymn was first sung.  In preparing the Presbyterian Hymnal (1990), the Presbyterian Hymnal Committee revised verse 2, line 3 to read, ‘you gifted your people.’  That reading appeared in several initial printings but was returned to the original and present reading, ‘you goaded your people,’ at the author’s request.”  For more tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of Glory to God: A Companion by Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D in our church library, or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

Festival of Faith: Mark your calendar for the Festival of Faith on Saturday, April 1, here at First Presby. The Keynote Speaker will be Jessica Tate, Director of NEXT Church. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Complete workshop information can be found at www.wvpresbytery.org.

It’s Charleston Trash Bag pick-up time again. If you have more bags than you can use, please donate them to the church. Please note you can bring your Trash Bag Voucher to the church if you can’t use the bags, and we will pick up the bags for the church.  Each year we save over $700 by using your donated bags. Thank you!
