Sunday Worship 10:30 a.m.

Worship is broadcast at 11:00 a.m. on WCHS-580AM

304-343-8961

 The cross on the chancel is made from three Christmas trees. It symbolizes the connection between cradle and cross as we celebrate the gift of God’s Son and His sacrifice for our salvation.

Next Week’s Sermon will be given by Doug Jenkins.

Sympathy of the Congregation is extended to Sharon Franklin on the death of her father, Denzel William on March 3, in Ohio.

 Five of our “hearing devices” are missing. Please check your coat and jacket pockets, and your cars for these expensive-to-replace listening aids. Thank you.

Many Ways to Support our Ministries: In addition to traditional cash and checks in the offering plate, you can give on our website firstpresby.com via your computer or smart phone, through our mobile app “Church Life” (you must first set up a user profile on our website to use the Church Life app.) or by texting 73256 and typing “firstpresby” in the message line. Use the QR code card in your pew rack to go directly to our giving page.

The Lay Academy continues to study “The Addictive Brain” today, from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in the Dining Room.  Dr. Thad Polk will lecture (DVD) on the science of Genetics and how we all inherit genes from our parents which both do and do not make us more susceptible to becoming addicts. Some of us are at more risk than others, which means we should be extra cautious. Dr. Robert H. Hansen, Director of Addiction Services at Marshall University School of Medicine and Dr. Sachin Bendre of CAMC-WVU, will join us to help lead the discussion. Everyone welcome. For more information, please contact the Church Office, 304-343-8961.

Children for Chicks Challenge!  Our Elementary age children are participating in a mission outreach project that we have termed, Children for Chicks Challenge!  During the Lenten season, the children will bring their offerings to Chapel time on Sunday mornings and work together to collect funds to buy a family of chickens for as many families in need as possible.  A high-producing chicken can lay up to one egg every day.  The gift of chickens helps a family have a reliable source of food that they might not otherwise have.  One family of chickens costs $25.00, individual chicks cost $5.00 each.  We are encouraging our entire congregation to support the children in their giving.  Today you will learn more about this effort during a Minute for Mission in Worship. You will have an opportunity to participate in the children’s fundraising efforts as they will be on-hand after worship today to receive your donation. (Please use the chick envelope provided in today’s bulletin.) All congregation members can stop by the Children For Chicks Challenge bulletin board in the main church hallway and select a chick(s) to purchase.  Simply pick your chick(s) and attach it(them) to the bulletin board.  Then, using the envelopes provided on the bulletin board, bring your donation to the front office.  On a weekly basis, chicks will be added to the bulletin board based on the amount of funds received.  Our Challenge is to fill the board with chicks!!  All funds received will be sent to PC(USA) to enable world mission to purchase a family of chicks for families in-need of nutrition.  Let us all do our part to help our children help their brothers and sisters throughout the world.

Youth will meet tonight from 6:00-8:30 p.m. in the Dining Room.

Easter Egg Celebration on Sunday, April 2, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. This celebration is for all ages and we will meet in the Recreation Room. Join us for Easter crafts, egg dyeing, Easter egg hunt, fun games, and more! For more information, contact Janet Chambers.

Food Pantry Needs: Cereal & Canned & Powdered Milk

Easter Egg Hunt: We need small wrapped candy to fill plastic Easter eggs (NO PEANUTS) for the Easter Egg Hunt Celebration. We will be filling a lot of eggs for the children’s big Egg Hunt. You can bring your candy to the Christian Education office or the main church office, by March 26. Thank you so much for helping.

More About the Music: The text for this morning’s middle hymn, “Blest Be the Tie That Binds,” was written by Rev. John Fawcett and was first published in the collection, “Hymns Adapted to the Circumstances of Public Worship and Private Devotion” (Leeds, 1782)  Here is an excerpt from our hymnal resource, “Glory to God: A Companion,” written by Carl Daw: “The text appearing here makes use of five of the six stanzas in Fawcett’s original hymn, which was titled ‘Brotherly Love’ when it was printed in the collection listed above.  The omitted stanza stood between the present fourth and fifth: ‘This glorious hope revives our courage by the way; While each in expectation lives, and longs to see the day.’ The only other change is in verse 4, where ‘are called to’ originally read ‘asunder.’ This has been a remarkable popular expression of Christian fellowship ever since it was first published. It has appeared in nearly two thousand English-language hymnals all around the globe.  Baptist and Congregational collections are especially likely to contain it, including those serving African American communities.”

St. John’s Bible Workshops: The St John’s Bible (SJB) is the first handwritten, illuminated Bible of its scale in more than 500 years. Using the NRSV translation, the SJB took an international team of six artists and six calligraphers fifteen years to complete (1995-2011). With 1,150 pages of handwritten calligraphy and 160 major illustrations, the SJB is the only full-scale, illuminated, fine-art edition of the Bible, and the Heritage Edition of the Gospel/Acts volume is coming to First Presby on Friday, March 31!  From 6:30-8:30 pm, Ann Laird Jones, Director of Arts Ministry at the Montreat Conference Center, will present a workshop for ages 6 and older to see, touch and engage with this amazing work of scripture and art. It will include introductory information, text study and a hands-on illuminated manuscript art activity (no previous art experience necessary). On Saturday, April 1, as part of Festival of Faith, there will be a one-hour workshop in the morning without an art activity. In the afternoon, there will be a workshop similar to the one offered Friday evening but using a different text. There is no cost for the Friday evening workshop, but we are asked to call the Presbytery office at (304)744-7634 in advance so that they can prepare enough art supplies for our use.

Cents-Ability Offering is received next Sunday, March 26: “To allow the hungry to remain hungry would be blasphemy against God and one’s neighbor, for what is nearest to God is precisely the need of one’s neighbor.  It is for the love of Christ, which belongs a much to the hungry as to myself, that I share my bread.  If the hungry do not attain to faith, then the fault falls on those who refused them bread. To provide the hungry with bread is to prepare the way for the coming of grace.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Please me mindful as to how you will give to the Cents-Ability offering.

Geneva Choir for youth and adults’ welcomes sopranos, altos, tenors, basses, and everyone in between. No prior musical experience is required; just a servant heart and a sense of humor. We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the Choir Room at the top of the stairs above the Susie Early Room.  Come sing with us!

Sojourners’ Class continues to study “Painting the Stars” on Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m., in Room 411 in the Education Building. This series studies and explores the promise of evolutionary Christian spirituality, investigating how our faith can grow when we are open and willing to listen for new wisdom and guidance from the Spirit who invites us to step out into new surprising and exciting dimensions of love for God and each other. Everyone is invited and welcome to share these learning experiences.

Festival of Faith: Mark your calendar for the Festival of Faith on Saturday, April 1, here at First Presby. Volunteers are needed to assist with the day’s activities. Call the church office to volunteer. The Keynote Speaker will be Jessica Tate, Director of NEXT Church. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. Complete workshop information can be found at www.wvpresbytery.org.

New Walking Community! Join us for a weekly walk on Mondays at 5:30 pm. We’ll meet in the parking lot by the activities building for a one hour walk and time of fellowship. If the weather is good we will walk outside, and if it is poor we will walk in the Activities Building. This is a great way to jump start your week with some exercise and time for reflection. But we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever. Micah 4:5.

 Worship Notes:  Do you know the “secret code” for our worship bulletins each Sunday?

Here’s the key:

Regular typeface—worship aids;

Bold typeface—what you say aloud;

Bold italics—what you sing

On the right side of each page,

Regular typeface—the name of the person leading that element

Italics—the name of the person who wrote the music

Small Capitals—the name of the hymn tune

If any heading is preceded by an asterisk [*HYMN] you may stand.

Thanks to Our Child Care Volunteers today in our nursery, toddler and preschool rooms. All child care rooms are equipped with live video feeds of the worship service. Do you love children and babies? Call the church office,304-343-8961, to volunteer in this special ministry.

Act of Faith: We are reminded that all we have comes from God.  Please remember to name the First Presbyterian Church as a beneficiary of your will, your retirement plan or of a life insurance policy in order that we may carry out God’s wishes and continue his work in our community and in the world.
