First Presby’s Weekly News January 22, 2017

Sunday Worship 10:30 a.m.

Worship is broadcast at 11:00 a.m. on WCHS-580AM

304-343-8961

Next Week’s Sermon will be given by Bill McCoy.

Sympathy of the Congregation is extended to:

  • Jean Mercer on the death of her son-in-law, Mike Miles on January 17.
  • Carol Carter on the death of her mother, Winifred Carter on January 11, in Franklin, PA.

A Congregational Meeting will be held today immediately following the worship service, for the purpose of reviewing the Pastors’ Terms of Call and electing members to serve on the Congregational Nominating Committee.

Cents-Ability Offering is received today. The frigid temperatures this time of year make it extremely difficult for families living on a tight budget to stretch their dollars, forcing some families to choose between keeping their homes warm or being able to buy groceries.  The Food Pantry helps fill the gap and provide nourishment when it might not otherwise be available.  Your gifts to the Cents-Ability Offering go a long way to help keep people fed and hopefully allowing them to be able to keep their heat on as well.

Financial Report for 2016: The past year saw many challenges for our church and West Virginia, the most significant being the June floods. Our congregation stepped up with great generosity as it has historically in times of need. And while contributions for the year were generous, they fell short of First Presby’s ministries by approximately $58,000. If you made a pledge for 2016 and have not yet fulfilled it, please consider doing so if your circumstances allow. Even a partial amount will help the church in going forward with our ministries and programs this year. God loves a cheerful giver! Thank you for your support in 2016.

Many ways to support our ministries: In addition to traditional cash and checks in the offering plate, you can give on our website firstpresby.com via your computer or smart phone, through our mobile app “Church Life” (you must first set up a user profile on our website to use the Church Life app.) or by texting 73256 and typing “firstpresby” in the message line. Use the QR code card in your pew rack to go directly to our giving page. God loves a Cheerful Giver.

Presbyterian Coffee Project: Coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolates, raisins, and nuts continue to be available for purchase after worship and during the week during church business hours.

This Week’s Food Pantry Needs:  Cereal and Meal Starters

Date Night: Fellowship and Rec is hosting a game and movie night in order to provide child care for children grades K-12 from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 11. If you have any questions email Payne at youth@firstpresby.com or call him at the church.

Youth: LOGOS and Youth Group have started back up for the semester. Please join us from 5:00-7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and 6:00-8:30 p.m. on Sundays.

The Youth are looking to raise money for various different activities (Mission Trips, Retreats, Triennium, etc.). If you need help with any tasks around your house, please email Payne at youth@firstpresby.com with your contact information, or call the Church office. We are willing to shovel snow, spread mulch, or help with other tasks. All we ask for is a donation to help us reach our goals and expand the opportunities for our youth to attend these events.

More About the Music: Below is an excerpt from Glory to God: A Companion about the tune for this morning’s middle hymn, “Here, O Our Lord, We See You”: “In 1857, this text appeared as a ten-stanza poem with the title ‘This Do in Remembrance of Me.’  The five stanzas printed here correspond to the first four and the last of the original. Two sets of pronouns have been altered: The original singular speaker’s voice has been made plural, and the second-person pronouns have been updated from archaic to modern forms. Despite its original title, this text deals more with anticipation than with remembering. Between present celebration and the feast it foreshadows remains an enduring sense of divine presence as ‘shield and sun.’ “For more tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of Glory to God: A Companion by Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D in our church library, or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

Geneva Choir for youth and adult’s welcomes sopranos, altos, tenors, basses, and everyone in between. No prior musical experience is required; just a servant heart and a sense of humor. We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the Choir Room at the top of the stairs above the Susie Early Room.  Come sing with us!

Care of Creation: A new roundup of recyclables will be added to our center in February.  Any brand of household cleaner packaging will be collected by the Care of Creation Committee and the Shepherd Center Recyclers and sent for reprocessing into new products.  This includes  pumps and caps, triggers, pouches, flexible product packaging, air freshener cartridges and plugs, and air freshener packaging. The collection of tape dispensers and oral health care items will be discontinued after February. Thanks to everyone who takes the time and effort to care for our environment by thoughtful recycling, reusing, and reducing waste! For more information, contact Nancy Struthers, 304-346-2226.

Thanks to Our Child Care Volunteers in our nursery, toddler and preschool rooms. All child care rooms are equipped with live video feeds of the worship service. Do you love children and babies? Call the church office, 304-343-8961, to volunteer in this special ministry.

Meet and Greet Davis & Elkins College’s new President, Chris Wood, Thursday, January 26, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the Ruffner Room. Dr. Wood is a West Virginia, native, born in Parkersburg, lived in Wheeling and spent most of his childhood and youth in Huntington.

Trash Bags: Thanks to all who have contributed their extra trash bags to the church. In the past these donations  saved the church over $700 per year. If you have any extra trash bags, which you are not going to use, please consider donating those to the church.  Our supply of bags is almost depleted.

Sojourners’ Class begins a new series of studies on Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m, in Room 411 in the Education Building. This new study series is called “Painting the Stars” and explores the promise of evolutionary Christian spirituality, investigating how our faith can grow when we are open and willing to listen for new wisdom and guidance from the Spirit who invites us to step out into new surprising and exciting dimensions of love for God and each other. These lessons will help us to support the work of our Session’s Strategic Planning Group. Everyone is invited and welcome to share these learning experiences.
