CHURCH OFFICE AND CHURCH BUILDINGS ARE CLOSED MONDAY, JANUARY 16, IN OBSERVANCE OF MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY.

Next Week’s Sermon will be given by Bill McCoy.

Congratulations to Mark and Adele Holmes on the birth of their grandson, Luke Winkler Ranson, on December 9, 2016, in Atlanta, Georgia. Parents are Jennifer and Chase Ranson and great-grandparents are Mosely and Sharon Winkler.

Many Ways to Support our Ministries: In addition to traditional cash and checks in the offering plate, you can give on our website firstpresby.com via your computer or smart phone, through our mobile app “Church Life” (you must first set up a user profile on our website to use the Church Life app.) or by texting 73256 and typing “firstpresby” in the message line. Use the QR code card in your pew rack to go directly to our giving page. God loves a Cheerful Giver.

The Presbyterian Women’s monthly luncheon will be held on Thursday, January 19, at 12 noon, in the dining room.  The program will be a combined Bible Study presented by Rev. Doug Jenkins. Deadline for reservations is January 16.  Call your Circle leader or the church office at 304-343-8961. ALL Presbyterian Women are invited. NOTE: Circles will NOT meet in January.

Fellowship & Rec Winter Breakfast: We were overwhelmed by the wonderful response to and success of our breakfast to kick-off Hope Village in November and we would like to make breakfast a regular event moving forward. We would like to invite the congregation to breakfast in the dining room on January 22 from 8:30-9:15 a.m. We will be featuring a variety of breakfast casseroles, fruit, hot chocolate, and plenty of coffee!  Please join us for this time of fellowship and celebration, everyone is welcome.

Presbyterian Coffee Project: Coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolates, raisins, and nuts continue to be available for purchase after worship and during the week during church business hours.

A Congregational Meeting will be held Sunday, January 22, immediately following the worship service, for the purpose of reviewing the Pastors’ Terms of Call and electing members to serve on the Congregational Nominating Committee.

This Week’s Food Pantry Needs:  Soups and Spaghettio Type Canned Foods

Sojourners’ Class meets Sunday’s at 9:15 a.m., in Room 411 in the Education Building, to continue to study “Jesus and His Jewish Influences.” Dr. Jodi Magness will present her final lecture, #24 in this series on “Jesus’ Teachings and Sayings in Context.” Everyone welcome to join this opportunity for learning and lively discussion.

Meet and Greet Davis & Elkins College’s new President, Chris Wood, January 26, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the Ruffner Room. Dr. Wood is a West Virginia native, born in Parkersburg, lived in Wheeling and spent most of his childhood and youth in Huntington.

More About the Music: Below is an excerpt from Glory to God: A Companion about this morning’s final hymn, “God of Grace and God of Glory”: “Harry Emerson Fosdick wrote this hymn while summering on Mouse Island in Boothbay Harbor off the coast of Maine in 1930. It turned out to be a hymn that was adaptable for the dedication service of the Riverside Church on February 8, 1931.  Especially when considered in the context of that magnificent New York City edifice, this hymn is a stirring reminder that “church” primarily denotes people and only secondarily a building, Almost every line is a prayer for the congregation; there is no celebration of the structure or its ornaments. As a result, this text has proved usable by a wide range of congregations gathered in any sort of building (or none).” For more tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of Glory to God: A Companion by Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D in our church library, or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

Geneva Choir for youth and adult’s welcomes sopranos, altos, tenors, basses, and everyone in between. No prior musical experience is required; just a servant heart and a sense of humor. We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the Choir Room at the top of the stairs above the Susie Early Room.  Come sing with us!

Thanks to Our Child Care Volunteers in our nursery, toddler and preschool rooms. All child care rooms are equipped with live video feeds of the worship service. Do you love children and babies? Call the church office, 304-343-8961, to volunteer in this special ministry.

Passing the Peace:  As cold and flu season approaches, please be aware that friends with depressed immune systems may welcome a greeting of a warm smile, a pat on the shoulder, etc., rather than a hand-shake. Please be attentive as you share the loving hospitality of Christ’s peace with each other.

Trash Bags: Thanks to all who have contributed their extra trash bags to the church. In the past this donation has saved the church over $700. If you have any extra trash bags which you are not going to use, please consider donating those to the church.  Our supply of bags is almost depleted.

Youth: LOGOS and Youth Group have started back up for the semester. Please join us from 5-7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and 6-8:30 p.m. on Sundays.

Boost Your Brain and Memory by Charles Daugherty: All are welcome and encourage to attend the Shepherd’s Center Luncheon on January 26 to hear from our own church members and authorities on this important, interesting and worthwhile subject!  No cost for the program.  Where:  First Presbyterian Church, Activities Building, 2nd Floor.  When:  January 26, 10:30–11:15 a.m.-Your Brain and Your Life by Dr. Robert G. Newman & Dr. Charles Daugherty, 11:45 a.m. – Hot Lunch cost, $8 (call Jewell Haddad at 304-342-5996 by noon on January 23 to reserve your lunch);  12:30 p.m. Boost Your Brain and Memory by Charles Daugherty.

Cents-Ability Offering is received next Sunday, January 22. The frigid temperatures this time of year make it extremely difficult for families living on a tight budget to stretch their dollars, forcing some families to choose between keeping their homes warm or being able to buy groceries.  The Food Pantry helps fill the gap and provide nourishment when it might not otherwise be available.  Your gifts to the Cents-Ability Offering go a long way to help keep people fed and hopefully allowing them to be able to keep their heat on as well.

Open Date for Flowers. If you would like to place flowers in the Sanctuary in memory or honor of a loved one, Sunday, January 22, is an open date. Please call the church office for further information.

Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Leagues are about to start. If you are interested in playing please contact Payne Warner at youth@firstpresby.com or call the church office.  Games are played Sunday afternoons and are usually played at the same church.
