Many ways to support our ministries: In addition to traditional cash and checks in the offering plate, you can give on our website firstpresby.com via your computer or smart phone, through our mobile app “Church Life” (you must first set up a user profile on our website to use the Church Life app.) or by texting 73256 and typing “firstpresby” in the message line. Use the QE code card in your pew rack to go directly to our giving page. God loves a Cheerful Giver.

Manna Meal Sandwich Making:  Thanks to the Elementary School children who made 200 sandwiches during Sunday School and, along with fruit, delivered to Manna Meal.

 The Presbyterian Women’s monthly luncheon will be held on Thursday, January 19, at 12 noon, in the dining room. The program will be a combined Bible Study presented by Rev. Doug Jenkins. Deadline for reservations is January 16.  Call your Circle leader or the church office at 304-343-8961. ALL Presbyterian Women are invited. NOTE: Circles will NOT meet in January.

Presbyterian Coffee Project: Coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolates, raisins, and nuts continue to be available for purchase after worship and during the week during church business hours.

A Congregational Meeting will be held Sunday, January 22, immediately following the worship service, for the purpose of reviewing the Pastor’ Terms of Call and electing members to serve on the Congregational Nominating Committee.

This Week’s Food Pantry Needs:  Peanut Butter, Canned and Dry Milk

 Sojourners’ Class meets today at 9:15 a.m., in Room 411 in the Education Building, to continue to study “Jesus and His Jewish Influences.” Dr. Jodi Magness presents her 23rd lecture, “Jesus’ Apocalyptic Outlook.” Everyone is welcome to learn from this imminent scholar and participate in lively discussions.

Offering Envelopes for those who requested them can be picked up on Sunday mornings on the table near the church office. They can also be picked up in the office during regular church office hours. Call the church office if you have questions or wish to get a box.

More about the music: Below is an excerpt from Glory to God: A Companion about this morning’s final hymn, “We Three Kings of Orient Are”: ” The images behind this 1857 text have long colored the way Christians read the account of the coming of the Magi (Matthew 2:1-12). The biblical account says only that they were “from the East,” a vague term that could include Arabia, Mesopotamia, or regions beyond. They are also said to have studied the stars, a detail that combines with the distance they have traveled to characterize them as Gentiles rather than as dispersed Jews. Their inferred royalty may have been connected with their respectful treatment at the court of Herod, their number was fixed at three because of their three gifts. This number was assumed in Western Christianity at least by the era of Origen (c.185-c. 254), though the Syrian church thought there might have been as many as twelve! Even the Reformation was unable to dislodge much of the religious affection for them. “For more tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of Glory to God: A Companion by Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D in our church library, or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

 Geneva Choir for youth and adult’s welcomes sopranos, altos, tenors, basses, and everyone in between. No prior musical experience is required; just a servant heart and a sense of humor. We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the Choir Room at the top of the stairs above the Susie Early Room.  Come sing with us!Thanks to Our Child Care Volunteers in our nursery, toddler and preschool rooms. All child care rooms are equipped with live video feeds of the worship service. Do you love children and babies? Call the church office, 304-343-8961, to volunteer in this special ministry.

Kroger Rewards: Do you shop at Kroger? The Kroger Family of Stores is committed to bringing hope and help to local communities. They do this through a variety of activities, including charitable giving and the Community Rewards Program. Kroger is also committed to carefully protecting customers’ personal information and have adopted a simple policy to never share a customer’s personal information. Our First Presby families (80 households) who have enrolled their Kroger Plus Card in this program and shopped at Kroger between 9-1-2016 and 11-30-2016 have contributed to Kroger’s $1,787.64 total donation to First Presby for the quarter.  Please consider helping us receive a larger donation from Kroger by enrolling your card at https://www.kroger.com/account/enrollCommunityRewardsNow. If you would like the church to enroll your card for you, please stop in or call the office and have your Kroger Plus Rewards card available. What a simple way to help the church do more to help others! Thank you!

 Youth Group will meet tonight from 6:00-8:30 p.m. in the dining room.

Act of Faith: We are reminded that all we have comes from God.  Please remember to name the First Presbyterian Church as a beneficiary of your will, your retirement plan or of a life insurance policy in order that we may carry out God’s wishes and continue his work in our community and in the world.

 Passing the Peace: As the cold and flu season approaches, please be aware that friends with depressed immune systems may welcome a greeting of a warm smile, a pat on the shoulder, etc., rather than a handshake. Please be attentive as you share the loving hospitality of Christ’s peace with each other.

Worship Notes:  Do you know the “secret code” for our worship bulletins each Sunday?

Here’s the key:

Regular typeface—worship aids;

Bold typeface—what you say aloud;

Bold italics—what you sing

On the right side of each page,

Regular typeface—the name of the person leading that element

Italics—the name of the person who wrote the music

Small Capitals—the name of the hymn tune

If any heading is preceded by an asterisk [*HYMN] you may stand.
