Sunday Worship 10:30 a.m.

Worship is broadcast at 11:00 a.m. on WCHS-580AM

304-343-8961

Next Week’s Sermon will be given by Davis & Elkins President, Chris Wood

Sympathy of the congregation is extended to:

  • The family of Mary Alice Elkins who died on November 2, 2016.
  • Bill Bone and family on the death of his brother-in-law, William V. Burnside, who died on October 28 in Beverly Hills, Florida.

Welcome to Kenneth and Melissa Starcher and their children, T-Bone and Guinevere, who joined the First Presby family last Sunday.

Today is Consecration Sunday. On this special day, we Christians at First Presbyterian Church are called to faithfully commit a portion of our monetary gifts to ministry here in 2017. Your gifts will change the lives of countless people, many of whom you know and/or will meet, and countless more in Charleston, in West Virginia and across the seas–people sitting across from you in the pew, children scampering joyfully forward to hear the Gospel, friends lifting drywall together in a flood-ravaged home. But many more other lives will be impacted when an orphaned child puts on a new pair of shoes, a homeless mother has a warm place to tuck her children into bed, and an abused teenager is rescued from a living nightmare.
Members of First Presby pledged to give $950,000 in 2016 so our church family could worship God, spread the Gospel and meet human needs. We are called to continue this ministry in 2017. Please prayerfully consider what portion of your blessings from God you will commit to ministry and bring forward your pledge card (or symbolic envelope if you have already pledged) today.

Lay Academy of Religion continues to study “Science and Religion” today in Room 201 in the Activities Building from 5:30-7:00 p.m.  Dr. Andrew Newberg lectures on “Why God Won’t Go Away” (DVD) and our own Dr. Timothy Spears will be the speaker and lead the discussion on his research on “The Brain and The Neuroscience of Addiction.” Free and everyone welcome. Bring a friend or neighbor. Contact the church office, 304-343-8961, for additional information.

Hope Village: Volunteers are needed for Hope Village!!  Hope Village opens today and help is needed with working in the shop.  This is a “Joyous Mission” of serving others and having fun at the same time.   Please call, text or email Mary Kay Boyle at 304-541-6943 or boyle.marykay@gmail.com.  We will have sign-up sheets in the hall today.  Please join us.  WE NEED YOU!!!

Sojourners Class continues to study “Jesus and His Jewish Influences” on Sunday mornings, 9:15 a.m., in Room 411 in the Education Building.  Today, Dr. Jodi Magness presents her 16th lecture in this series, this one on “The Hebrew Scriptures and the Septuagint” (DVD). Everyone is invited to learn more about the history and background of the New Testament and to discuss together how this knowledge helps us to grow in our discipleship.

This Week’s Food Pantry Needs:  canned meats, such as chicken, tuna or salmon

Advent Workshop: Join us on November 30 at 5:00 p.m. for crafts for children and youth in the Bud Francis Recreation Room, and wreath making (choice of Advent or hanging wreath) in the dining room. At 6:00 p.m. we will have a pizza dinner. Lessons and Carols rehearsal for all LOGOS children and youth will follow dinner. It was previously announced that Advent Workshop was on December 7, but after a small amount of confusion the correct date is NOVEMBER 30. For more information, email janet@firstpresby.com.

Childcare Volunteers are needed for Sunday Mornings: We need a few enthusiastic and loving adults to volunteer to be in a rotation for childcare on Sunday mornings. If you are interested, please send an email to janet@firstpresby.com or call the church office at 304-343-8961. We would love to have you on our childcare team!

Children’s Bible Study: Following Time with Young Disciples and the Passing of the Peace, all children in grades one-five are invited to join us for Bible study in room E-113. Janet Chambers will walk the children to their classroom. If this is your child’s first time visiting Children’s Bible Study, please accompany them to the room so that you can sign them in and get acquainted with our teachers.

Geneva Choir for youth and adults welcomes sopranos, altos, tenors, basses, and everyone in between. No prior musical experience is required; just a servant heart and a sense of humor. We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the Choir Room at the top of the stairs above the Susie Early Room.  Come sing with us!

More about the Music: The following is an excerpt from Glory to God: A Companion about the tune “Forest Green,” which is the melody for this morning’s middle hymn, “As Those of Old Their Firstfruits Brought:” “The basis of this tune is an English ballad called ‘The Ploughboy’s Dream,’ a fictional warning against swearing.  There are broadside copies of the words dating from at least 1795…attributed to William Mason (1725-1777). This particular tune (melody only) seems first to have been transcribed by Ralph Vaughan Williams in December 1903, from the singing of a Mr. Garman at Forest Green, a village two miles northwest of Ockley, Surrey.  Vaughan Williams provided a harmonized setting of the tune in The English Hymnal, where it served as the setting for ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’…The tune name, as was Vaughan Williams’s custom, recalls the location where he heard the tune.” For more fun tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of Glory to God: A Companion by Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D in our church library, or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

A Visit from Davis and Elkins College!  Make plans to join us next Sunday morning, November 13, when we will welcome guests from our local PC(USA) college to worship leadership.  D & E President Chris Wood will preach and the D & E College Choir will give several musical offerings during the service.  After worship, we’ll enjoy a special lunch prepared by Kim and Sherry for all of us and our college guests in the Dining Room. Complete the tear off tear or call the church office for lunch reservations
