We Welcome the Rev. Dr. Chris Wood of Davis & Elkins College to the pulpit this morning.  Chris was named the College’s 15th President on August 1, 2016. A native of Huntington, West Virginia, President Wood graduated magna cum laude from West Virginia Wesleyan College and earned his graduate degree from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary at Northwestern University, with further graduate study at the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy.

We also Welcome the Davis & Elkins College Concert Choir and their director, Liz Marshall-McVean, to music leadership in worship this morning.  Liz holds B.A. and M.A. degrees in music education, both from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA.  She has taught at Davis & Elkins College for seven years and also teaches in area public schools. Of her work at Davis & Elkins, Liz says, ” I love the students and the professional atmosphere of the College. Everyone is awesome and always willing to go that extra mile to make projects a success!” Join the choir for lunch after worship in the dining room.

The Personnel Division would like to announce we have hired Nancy McLaughlin as the new Pastor Administrative Assistant. Nancy is currently the Assistant to the Principal at St. Agnes Elementary School. Nancy impressed us with her competence, warmth and Christian background. She will begin on November 17 and work alongside Marilyn Walbe until Marilyn’s last day on November 30. Please welcome Nancy to the church staff and express your appreciation to Marilyn for her many years of service to First Presby.

Hope Village is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. and after worship on Sundays through December 18. You will find items from many countries in the Village and the artisans receive a fair and just wage for their work.

Thanksgiving Offering: Next Sunday, November 20, our church has an opportunity to give to a special Thanksgiving Offering to benefit Davis-Stuart, Inc., which is a Presbyterian Therapeutic Residential Center for Adolescents based in Lewisburg WV.  This special offering supports the Chaplaincy Program offered at Davis Stuart. The Chaplaincy Program seeks to promote the awareness of our heritage of the Christian faith and that necessary knowledge which makes Christian choices and decision possible. Many youth who reside at Davis-Stuart have never been involved in spiritual teachings.  Out of thankful hearts, please give to benefit the lives of at-risk youth as they seek to grow in their knowledge and love of Christ.

Youth Group will meet tonight from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the dining room. We will not meet on November 20, and we will have a game night or movie night on November 27..

More about the music: Below is an excerpt from Glory to God: A Companion about this morning’s middle hymn, “Lord, You Have Come to the Lakeshore:” This is one of the most popular songs to emerge from the revival of religious song in Spain in the 1970s.  Not only did it spread quickly to all Spanish-speaking countries, but also it was translated into more than eighty languages within the author/composer’s lifetime.  This text is based on Matthew 4:18-22/Mark 1:16-20//Luke 5:1-11, the story of the calling of the four fishermen, Peter, Andrew, James, and John.  It is an imagined monologue by one of the four, who becomes the spokesperson for anyone who has felt the call of Christ. For more fun tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of Glory to God: A Companion by Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D in our church library, or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

Geneva Choir for youth and adults welcomes sopranos, altos, tenors, basses, and everyone in between. No prior musical experience is required; just a servant heart and a sense of humor. We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the Choir Room at the top of the stairs above the Susie Early Room.  Come sing with us!

Thanks to Our Child Care Volunteers in our nursery, toddler and preschool rooms. All child care rooms are equipped with live video feeds of the worship service. Do you love children and babies? Call the church office, 304-343-8961, to volunteer in this special ministry.

“Oh the weather outside is frightful…” these lyrics have little meaning to use in mid-November. Although sometimes it does get quite cold in November, we’ve not had frightful weather yet this year…it is coming! We are inviting you now to think of the many children right here in Charleston, West Virginia that do not have mittens, hats and scarves to keep warm.  We are asking each family to bring a new pair of mittens or gloves, of any size (especially bright colorful ones!).  We will be hanging these gifts of love on a Christmas tree outside the Preschool Office so that everyone can share in the warmth of giving and pride they will display.  All of the mittens, gloves, hats and scarves benefit local children.   We thank you for your participation in this project.  It is our hope that through this cooperative venture between the Preschool and home, the concept of sharing through giving will be modeled.  Help us fill the tree …with love!

Passing the Peace:  As cold and flu season approaches, please be aware that friends with depressed immune systems may welcome a greeting of a warm smile, a pat on the shoulder, etc., rather than a hand-shake. Please be attentive as you share the loving hospitality of Christ’s peace with each other.
