We are happy to share such a precious gift with our friends!

Children’s Bible Study: Following Time with Young Disciples and the Passing of the Peace, all children in grades one-five are invited to join us for Bible Study in room E-113. Janet Chambers will walk the children to their classroom. If this is your child’s first time visiting Children’s Bible Study, please accompany them to the room so that you can sign them in and get acquainted with our teachers.

The Lay Academy continues to study “Science and Religion” today from 5:30-7:00 p.m., in Room 201 in the Activities Building.  Scientist Doug Chambers will lead the discussion following the DVD lecture by Dr. Andrew Newberg on “How God Changes the Brain”.  Doug Chambers is a Water-Quality Specialist for the U.S. Geological Survey’s Virginia-West Virginia Water Science Center.  Everyone is welcome to join us for learning and a lively discussion on how Science and Spirituality are a part of our daily lives.  For more information, please contact the Church Office, 304-343-8961.

Hands for Hope is being organized for the first weekend of November-please spread the word! Our neighbors in the Clendenin/Elkview areas are desperate to get back in their homes before winter. An effort is underway to get as many people as possible to do a blitz campaign. After the epic flooding in June, there was a wonderful outpouring of help and support, but since then the help has dropped off. Our friends need us now. Can you help spread the word and organize a work group on Friday, November 4 and/or Saturday, November 5? Locations and supplies will be organized in advance.  Laborers, food for the workers, and donations for the materials are needed.  Two hands can make a big difference.  Imagine what a group can do! Contact Sandy Campbell at 304-543-6553 to learn more about this project.

Presbyterian Coffee Project: Coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolates, raisins, and nuts continue to be available for purchase after worship and during the week during church business hours.

Sojourners’ Sunday School Class continues to study “Jesus and His Jewish Influences,” Sunday mornings, 9:15 a.m., in Room 411 in the Education Building.  Dr. Jodi Magness gives her fifteenth lecture on “Was Jesus an Essene?” (DVD).  Everyone welcome to join us for learning and a lively discussion.

This Week’s Food Pantry Needs:  Boxed Skillet Meals & Peanut Butter

Hope Village: Volunteers are needed for Hope Village!! Yes, it’s time again to prepare for the opening of Hope Village on Sunday, November 6.  Assistance is needed with the taking of inventory, publicity to the community and then the JOY of working in the shop.  This is a “Joyous Mission” of serving others and having fun at the same time.  Boxes are arriving daily from our beautiful artisans. Please call, text or email Mary Kay Boyle at 304-541-6943 or boyle.marykay@gmail.com.  We will have sign-up sheets in the hall today.  Please join us.  WE NEED YOU!!!

Hope Village Kick-Off Breakfast next Sunday, November 6, 8:30 to 9:15 a.m.: The Fellowship and Recreation Committee is partnering up with Mary Kay Boyle, Hope Village, and the Men of the Church to celebrate the return of Hope Village with a kick-off breakfast in the Dining Room before Sunday School. No need to bring anything except a thankful heart that this time of year is back. Please consider wearing a purchase you have made in a previous year. During Sunday School, Hope Village will be open to give people an early opportunity to start their looking and hopefully buying.

A Visit from Davis and Elkins College!  Mark your calendars now for Sunday morning, November 13, when we will welcome guests from our local PC(USA) college to worship leadership.  D & E President Chris Wood will preach and the D & E College Choir will give several musical offerings during the service.  After worship, we’ll enjoy a special dinner prepared by Kim and Sherry for all of us and our college guests in the Dining Room.  Call or email the church office to let them know you’re coming.  Don’t miss it!

Geneva Choir for youth and adults welcomes sopranos, altos, tenors, basses, and everyone in between. No prior musical experience is required; just a servant heart and a sense of humor. We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the Choir Room at the top of the stairs above the Susie Early Room.  Come sing with us!

Please Pray for the Session and for the members of the Strategic Planning Task Force as they seek God’s will and direction for the future of our church.  Members of the Strategic Planning Task Force are Mike Graney, Kristen Harrison, Charlie Lorenson, Nikki Moses, Dave Nolan, Sandy Zando, and Bill McCoy (ex-officio).

Thanks to Our Child Care Volunteers today in our nursery, toddler and preschool rooms. All child care rooms are equipped with live video feeds of the worship service. Do you love children and babies? Call the church office,304-343-8961, to volunteer in this special ministry.

More about the music: Contrary to popular belief, the tune for this morning’s opening hymn, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,” was never sung in a bar, and it was not based on a popular song of its day.  Below is an excerpt from Glory to God: A Companion about the great Reformer Martin Luther’s original tune, “Ein’ FesteBurg:”

“Although numerous suggestions have been made for melody sources (plainchant, psalm tunes, a French chanson, Hans Sach’s ‘Silberweise’), no convincing precedent has been found…Given his known musical abilities, it seems reasonable to assume that Luther did indeed write his own tune for this text, using familiar rhythmic and melodic patterns accessible for congregational singing.  One measure of his skillfulness is the survival of his tune despite all the changes it has undergone as the result of shifts in musical taste…The Presbyterian version, for example, has some measures that have remained unaltered since the 1895/1911 hymnal, and some from 1933, with everything reaching the present form in the Hymnbook (1955)…Although it seeks to perpetuate the spirit of Bach’s treatment of this chorale in his Cantata no. 80, it is not directly taken from that work.”

For more fun tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of Glory to God: A Companion by Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D. in our church library, or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

Youth Group: We will meet at 6:00 p.m. tonight in our normal place in the Activities Building

Daylight Savings Time Ends Next Sunday:  Turn your clocks back 1 hour next Saturday night, November 5, before you go to bed or you may be very late for Sunday Services.
