Sunday Worship 10:30 a.m.

Worship is broadcast at 11:00 a.m. on WCHS-580AM

Next Week’s Sermon is “ANCIENT WORDS: Covenants”, by Bill McCoy.

Children’s Bible Study: Following Time with Young Disciples and the Passing of the Peace, all children in grades one-five are invited to join us for Bible Study in room E-113. Janet Chambers will walk the children to their classroom. If this is your child’s first time visiting Children’s Bible Study, please accompany them to the room so that you can sign them in and get acquainted with our teachers.

The Lay Academy of Religion: Dr. Chuck Moyers (Ph.D., Chemical Engineering) will lead the discussion on Science and Religion when the Lay Academy meets today from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., in Room 201 in the Activities Building. Dr. Andrew Newberg will lecture on “How the Brain Changes God” (DVD).  We know that God speaks to us, but what does Science discover about how our Brain influences how we hear God speak to us?  Free and everyone welcome. Bring a friend or neighbor.  Lectures are free and everyone welcome.  For more information, please contact the Church Office, 304-343-8961.

The Cents-Ability Offering is Received Today: The Bishop of Assisi once said to St. Francis, “I think your life is too hard, too rough. You don’t possess anything in this world.” Francis replied, “My Lord, if we had possessions, we would need weapons to defend them.”  The Bible tells us not to store up treasures that are perishable, but to store up treasures that cannot rot or be stolen. The people in Jesus’ day understood heavenly treasure to mean caring for the needy.  What kind of treasures are you storing up?  Are you willing to give a bit of your treasure to the Cents-Ability Offering?  Prayerfully consider how you might be willing to give.

Presbyterian Coffee Project: Coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolates, raisins, and nuts continue to be available for purchase after worship and during the week during church business hours. Baskets Are Needed to be used to create gift baskets for holiday gifts, using items from the Presbyterian Coffee Project. Also needed is tissue paper, all colors, new and used. Items can be left in church office.

Hope Village: Volunteers are needed for Hope Village!! Yes, it’s time again to prepare for the opening of Hope Village on Sunday, November 6.  Assistance is needed with the taking of inventory, publicity to the community and then the JOY of working in the shop.  This is a “Joyous Mission” of serving others and having fun at the same time.  Boxes have begun to arrive  from our beautiful artisans. Please call, text or email Mary Kay Boyle at 304-541-6943 or boyle.marykay@gmail.com.  We will have sign-up sheets in the hall today.  Please join us.  WE NEED YOU!!!

Hope Village Kick-Off Breakfast Sunday, November 6, 8:30 to 9:15 a.m: The Fellowship and Recreation Committee is partnering up with Mary Kay Boyle, Hope Village, and the Men of the Church to celebrate the return of Hope Village with a kick-off breakfast in the Dining Room before Sunday School. No need to bring anything except a thankful heart that this time of year is back. Please consider wearing an example of a purchase you have made in a previous year. During the Sunday School hour, Hope Village will be open to give people an early opportunity to start their looking and hopefully buying.

This Week’s Food Pantry Needs:  Toilet Tissue & Cereal

Church Position Available:  Marilyn Walbe, our Pastor Administrative Assistant, is retiring at the end of November. We are currently taking applications from non-church members for this full-time position. The candidate should have the ability to multi-task and maintain a pleasant demeanor when communicating with all people, while maintaining strict confidentiality. The successful candidate will be capable of working independently, manage projects and contribute to committee and team efforts. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and database software is required. If you know of a person who meets these requirements and would be an asset to our church staff, please have them contact the church office to receive an application.

A Visit from Davis and Elkins College!  Mark your calendars now for Sunday morning, November 13, when we will welcome guests from our local PC(USA) college to worship leadership.  D & E President Chris Wood will preach and the D & E College Choir will give several musical offerings during the service.  After worship, we’ll enjoy a special dinner prepared by Kim and Sherry for all of us and our college guests in the Dining Room.  Call or email the church office to let them know you’re coming.  Don’t miss it!

More About the Music: Below is an excerpt from Glory to God: A Companion about this morning’s middle hymn, “Of the Father’s Love Begotten:”

“This hymn has a long history.  It began as part of the Cathermerinon (Daily round [of prayers]) created in the 5th century by a retired Romano Spanish lawyer.  In that collection was a “Hymnus omnis horae” (Hymn for all hours), surveying the birth, life, death, resurrection, ascension, and reign of Christ in thirty-seven stanzas plus a doxology.  From that longer text, this hymn has been extracted…The rhyme scheme here was created for the English text because there is none evident in the Latin original…It is also worth noting how much more effective it was to fill the seven syllables of the additional line of music with the recurring final line than it would have been to repeat the penultimate line of each stanza.  That changeless line provides a context of eternity against which to recall the narrative of the Incarnation.”

For more fun tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of Glory to God: A Companion by Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D in our church library, or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

Geneva Choir for youth and adults, welcomes sopranos, altos, tenors, basses, and everyone in between. No prior musical experience is required; just a servant heart and a sense of humor. We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the Choir Room at the top of the stairs above the Susie Early Room. Come sing with us!

Thanks to Our Child Care Volunteers in our nursery, toddler and preschool rooms. All child care rooms are equipped with live video feeds of the worship service. Do you love children and babies? Call the church office, 304-343-8961, to volunteer in this special ministry.

Please pray for the Session and for the members of the Strategic Planning Task Force as they seek God’s will and direction for the future of our church. Members of the Strategic Planning Task Force are Mike Graney, Kristen Harrison, Charlie Lorenson, Nikki Moses, Dave Nolan, Sandy Zando, and Bill McCoy (ex-officio).

Coat Drive for Flood Victims: As part of our continued effort to help those who were affected by the June floods, we have had the wonderful opportunity to buy new coats for children and youth whose families lost everything in the flood.  We continue to work with St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Pinch who are in close relationship with 20 families who were devastated by the floods.  St. Andrew’s has made a commitment to help those families for a year.  Our contributions are a part of their efforts.  As the cold weather will be approaching quickly, it is our desire to have all coats to St. Andrew’s for distribution on November 1. If you took a name from the Bulletin Board to purchase a coat, please bring your coat to the church office on or by Friday, October 28.  Please pin the identifying card that you take from the bulletin board on the coat to make for a smooth delivery. Thank you to all who are providing help and hope to those who been living in such turmoil and distress since the floods happened in June.
