More about the music: Below is an excerpt from Glory to God: A Companion about this morning’s middle hymn, “In the Cross of Christ I Glory”:

“Like Isaac Watts’s “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” this text can be regarded as based on Galatians 6:14.  But Watts is concerned with Christ hanging on the cross, while Bowring focuses on the cross itself as symbol.  Though both are very visually oriented texts, Watts imagines the cross at the time of the Crucifixion, but Bowring is more concerned with the cross “through all time.”  It was once believed that the “towering o’er the wrecks of time” line in stanzas 1 and 5 was based on Bowring’s experience of seeing a soot-blackened cross on top of the remaining west wall of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Fatima in Macau after a fire had destroyed the building.  But Bowring was not appointed as the British consul to Canton (now Guangzhou) until 1848, twenty-three years after this hymn was published. The story has persisted, however, because people like to connect hymns to such vignettes. The text is printed here without alteration.  The opening line of this hymn was engraved on the author’s tombstone.”

For more fun tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of Glory to God: A Companion by Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D in our church library, or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

Geneva Choir for youth and adults welcomes sopranos, altos, tenors, basses, and everyone in between. No prior musical experience is required; just a servant heart and a sense of humor. We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the Choir Room at the top of the stairs above the Susie Early Room.  Come sing with us!

Sojourners’ Class continues to study, “Jesus and His Jewish Influences,” Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m., in room 411 in the Education Building.  Dr. Jodi Magness gives her fourteenth lecture on “The Dead Sea Scrolls: Earliest Hebrew Bible” (DVD). Everyone welcome to join this time for learning and discussion.

  • Sunday, November 6, 8:30-9:15 a.m.: Hope Village Kick-Off Breakfast We are celebrating the return of Hope Village with a kick-off breakfast in the Dining Room before Sunday school. No need to bring anything except a thankful heart that this time of year is back.

Please pray for the Session and for the members of the Strategic Planning Task Force as they seek God’s will and direction for the future of our church.  Members of the Strategic Planning Task Force are Mike Graney, Kristen Harrison, Charlie Lorenson, Nikki Moses, Dave Nolan, Sandy Zando, and Bill McCoy (ex-officio).

The Cents-Ability Offering is Received Next Sunday: The Bishop of Assisi once said to St. Francis, “I think your life is too hard, too rough. You don’t possess anything in this world.”  Francis replied, “My Lord, if we had possessions, we would need weapons to defend them.”  The Bible tells us not to store up treasures that are perishable, but to store up treasures that cannot rot or be stolen.  The people in Jesus’ day understood  heavenly treasure to mean caring for the needy.   What kind of treasures are you storing up?  Are you willing to give a bit of your treasure to the Cents-Ability Offering?  Prayerfully consider how you might be willing to give.

Youth Group: The youth will be meeting at their regular time, 6:00-8:30 p.m., tonight.  Next Sunday,    October 23, the youth will be meeting at Rock Lake.

Coat Drive for Flood Victims: As part of our continued effort to help those who were affected by the June floods, we have a wonderful opportunity to buy new coats for children and youth whose families lost everything in the flood.  We continue to work with St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Pinch who are in close relationship with 20 families who were devastated by the floods.  St. Andrew’s has made a commitment to help those families for a year.  Our contributions are a part of their efforts.  As the cold weather will be approaching quickly, it is our desire to have all coats to St. Andrew’s for distribution on November 1.  There is a bulletin board in the main church hallway with the names and sizes of the child/youth that we will be buying a coat for.  PLEASE go to the board, choose a child/youth, and sign up to purchase a coat.  Once purchased, please bring your coat to the church office on or by Friday, October 28.  Please pin the identifying card that you take from the bulletin board on the coat to make for a smooth delivery. Thank you to all who are providing help and hope to those who been living in such turmoil and distress since the floods happened in June.

Combined Sunday School ClassOctober 23, ALL are Welcome, Please Come!! For the past 6 years, First Presby has been blessed to support the mission work of Bob and Kristi Rice and the long standing ministry of the Presbyterian Church serving in Congo.  Please join in a combined Sunday School class in the Dining Room, as together we meet and learn from Bob and Kristi about their work and the ways God is using them and their ministry.  Bob and Kristi Rice began as mission workers of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in the Democratic Republic of Congo in January 2010, where they serve with the Presbyterian Community of Congo (CPC). “God has woven Africa into our hearts and called us to serve him there.”

It is not often that we have the opportunity to meet and be together with the mission co-workers our church supports.  So, please come to show your support for Bob and Kristi and see how your mission dollars are at work in the world at large. Light refreshments will be provided.  All are welcome – you do not need to be in a Sunday School class to join in!
