More About the Music: Below is an excerpt from Glory to God: A Companion about this morning’s Response, “Thy Word is a Lamp Unto My Feet:” “According to the composer, Michael W. Smith, he had sketched out a melody for the refrain from Psalm 119:105 and for stanzas to go with it, but he had no words for the stanzas.  He had brought what he had done to their session at a recording studio high in the Rocky Mountains and asked Grant to decide on words that would work with the music.  Later that night as she headed back to her cabin in the dark, she got lost.  After wandering for a while in that unfamiliar terrain, she finally saw a lamp in a window and started walking toward it, not realizing that the light was in her own cabin.  Greatly relieved, she walked into that small cabin and sat down with a notebook and pen and wrote this stanza and an additional one not included in the hymnal.”

For more fun tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of Glory to God: A Companion by Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D in our church library, or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

Geneva Choir for youth and adults welcomes sopranos, altos, tenors, basses, and everyone in between. No prior musical experience is required; just a servant heart and a sense of humor. We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9 p.m. in the Choir Room at the top of the stairs above the Susie Early Room.  Come sing with us!

Sojourners Class continues to study “Jesus and His Jewish Influences” Sundays, 9:15 a.m., Room 411 in the Education Building. Dr. Jodi Magness gives her 13th lecture on “Jewish Ritual Purity: The Sons of Light.” Everyone welcome to join us for lively learning and discussion.

Fellowship & Recreation: There are several upcoming events to add to your calendar:

  • Saturday, October 22, 2:00-4:00 p.m.: Pumpkin Carving and Painting. Please join us in the Dining Room for snacks, drinks, and music. Bring your own pumpkin and we will have all you need to carve and decorate.
  • Sunday, November 6, 8:30-9:15 a.m.: Hope Village Kick-Off Breakfast We are celebrating the return of Hope Village with a kick-off breakfast in the Dining Room before Sunday School. No need to bring anything except a thankful heart that this time of year is back.

The Doves of Peace throughout the sanctuary were created by our Sunday School children and LOGOS children and youth.  They bear messages of peace written by our young people on behalf of the whole congregation as part of our Peace and Global Witness Offering.  This is the first of a four-part offering given by our elementary Sunday School children as part of this year’s Godly Play curriculum.  As the Doves of Peace cover our sanctuary, may God cover our world with His peace.

Please pray for the Session and for the members of the Strategic Planning Task Force as they seek God’s will and direction for the future of our church.  Members of the Strategic Planning Task Force are Mike Graney, Kristen Harrison, Charlie Lorenson, Nikki Moses, Dave Nolan, Sandy Zando, and Bill McCoy (ex-officio).
