Lay Academy continues to study SCIENCE & RELIGION today at 5:30 p.m. in Room A201 in the Activities Building. Dr. Andrew Newberg’s lecture is on “Religion and Brain Dysfunction.” (DVD)  He explores the ecstatic religious experience of speaking in tongues, which is popular among Pentecostal Christian Churches all across the world.  How can Science help us to understand this highly emotional spiritual experience, including both strengths and weaknesses?  Everyone welcome to join this.  For more information, please contact the Church Office (304) 343-8961.

The Pentecost Offering is received next Sunday, May 15: The Pentecost Offering is all about helping people begin life with a strong start. A solid foundation formed from childhood through young adulthood enables individuals to weather life’s storms and build on life’s opportunities.  As was promised on the day of Pentecost, our sons and our daughters are prophesying, and we are hearing their wisdom. The Presbyterian Youth Triennium is a venue where many youth find their voices of faith. More than 5,000 youth, to include 13 First Presby youth and 3 local Presbyterian staff and volunteers, will gather at Purdue University in July, and many will return to their congregations with a new understanding of faith and its relevance for their lives. It’s a five-day event whose impact on individuals can last a lifetime.  The Pentecost Offering also supports the Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) program which promotes youth volunteerism within the U.S. and around the world.  This offering also supports the “Educate a Child, Transform the World” initiative which provides enrichment and supplies for children living in poverty in the U.S.

Your Gifts to the Pentecost Offering make a tremendous impact on the spiritual life of youth

Get Your Footprint and Help a Child residing in the W.V. Foster Care System-Barefoot Sunday is June 5: Don’t’ Delay – Be the first to get your footprint from the bulletin board in the main hallway to purchase a new pair of shoes for a child in need. This year’s Barefoot Sunday recipients are the children and youth who reside at the Children’s Home Society of the Kanawha Valley and Davis-Stuart, Inc. in Lewisburg. Both of these organizations provide shelter care, foster care, and life skills training for children and adolescents in need. Most of these children enter the state care system with very few belongings, usually carried in a brown bag. These children typically come from impoverished homes and many have never had the luxury of a new pair of shoes. Select from the bulletin board a “footprint” with information about a child, who is being cared for by the Children’s Home Society or Davis-Stuart, Inc. or who is being cared for by a W.V. foster family. You will use the information about the child and their shoe size and color preference on the “footprint” to purchase a new pair of shoes for the child.  Or you may choose to make a financial contribution, and select a “brown bag” from the bulletin board.  Your financial contribution will be used to buy any shoes for any footprint that was not selected or to be given to WVCHS or Davis, Stuart, Inc. for future shoe purchases for children as they are brought into the foster system. On June 5, Barefoot Sunday, you will bring your offering, either of new shoes or financial contribution, to the front of the sanctuary during the offertory time in the worship service.

The children that are in the foster care system do not have the option to ask their parents for a new pair of shoes, not even on special occasions. Please be a part of providing something special for these children. As always, feel free to come to church barefooted on Barefoot Sunday

We Need Polyfill Stuffing for fabric animals for a Vacation Bible School project.  This is a mission project.  The kids will sew and stuff animals to give to someone in need. Your contributions may be left in the church office.
