Worship is broadcast at 11:00 a.m. on WCHS-580AM

304-343-8961

Next Week’s Sermon is “Ancient Words: Joy”, by Bill McCoy.

Sympathy of the congregation is extended to:

Elizabeth Lambros and family on the death of her husband, John Lambros, on September 8.

Gordon Lane and family on the death of his mother, Marianne Lane, September 10.

Children’s Bible Study: Following Time with Young Disciples and the Passing of the Peace, all children in grades 1-5 are invited to join us for Bible Study in room E-113. Janet Chambers will walk the children to their classroom. If this is your child’s first time visiting Children’s Bible Study, please accompany them to the room so that you can sign them in and get acquainted with our teachers.

We Welcome the FPC String Ensemble to Worship:  Today’s group includes violinists Sam Keller, James Odin, Mary Odin, and Ruth Odin, violists Kiera Daugherty and Addie Riley, and cellists Devlin Daugherty, Sarah Snider, and Will Snider.  If you would like to join our merry band the next time we play, just email Mary Odin at modin@firstpresby.com and she’ll write parts for you, too!

All Church Picnic is today at 4:00 p.m. at Coonskin Park, Gorman Shelter. We will have games and activities for all ages beginning at 4:00 p.m., dinner at 5:00 p.m., live music, and a dessert contest. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. Meat and beverage provided. To enter the dessert contest, simply bring any dessert item to the picnic by 4:30 p.m. Our three special judges will sample all entries anonymously and pick their favorites. Winners in each category (youth and adult) will be announced after dinner. If you are entering the contest, please bring a copy of your recipe for publication. Please note that the entrance to Coonskin Park is now from the Mink Shoals exit on I-79 and not through the National Guard base.

Knitting Group: We continue to make scarves and hats for flood victims. All are welcome to join us, even if you can’t attend our gatherings. We will meet on September 20 at 10:00 a.m., both in Room 406 in the Education Building.  Contact Laura Ceperley at 304-389-3562.

Geneva Choir for Youth and Adults welcomes sopranos, altos, tenors, basses, and everyone in between. No prior musical experience is required; just a servant heart and a sense of humor.  We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9 p.m. in the Choir Room at the top of the stairs above the Susie Early Room.  Come sing with us!

Open Dates for Flowers: If you would like to place flowers in the sanctuary in memory or honor of a loved one, Sundays, October 9 and October 16, are open dates.  Please call the church office, 304-343-8961.

This Week’s Food Pantry Needs:  Canned Meals such as Beef Stew & Canned Meats

A Congregational Meeting will be held Sunday, September 25, immediately following the worship service for the following purposes:

  1. Election of a Pastor Nominating Committee to seek an Associate Pastor for Congregational Care.
  2. Election of officers for the Class of 2019.

Youth: There will be a Lock-In at the YMCA on September 23. Please RSVP to Payne Warner by September 18. Sunday Night Youth group meets from 6:00-8:30 p.m. If you would like more information about upcoming youth events, please contact Payne, youth@firstpresby.com.

Needed: We are looking for adult and parent volunteers to help with youth group activities. Areas we need help with are: preparing and serving meals, leading Bible study and Sunday School, transportation, and chaperoning events. If you are interested please contact Payne.

COED Church League Volleyball: We have two teams (Divisions 1 and 2). The games are Sunday afternoons, and they are beginning today. In order to be eligible you must follow the same attendance rules as the Basketball League. If you are interested in playing please contact Payne.

Church League Basketball: To be eligible to participate in church league basketball, you must attend church or Sunday school twice a month, on two separate dates, beginning in September. You must attend twice a month throughout the entire season (September through the end of February). Registration forms are now available. If you have any questions, please contact Payne Warner, youth@firstpresby.com.

As You Pray: Please remember all those, known and unknown to us, serving in the United States Armed Forces, assuring the Freedom we all value.

Local Mission Grant Applications: Through your very generous pledge and plate offerings, we are able to fund many local mission outreach grant requests each year.  First Presby has a very long and rich history of supporting local non-profit agencies/organizations that work to promote a better quality of life for those in need in our community. If you know of or have an association with a 501c3 organization that would qualify to submit a grant application, please make them aware of this opportunity. The grant applications for 2017 are on the information table in the hallway. Applications are due on or before September 30, 2016.  Please contact Sue Webster if you have any questions.

Flood Relief Opportunities to Serve Now:  We are looking for a small work crew, male or female, to form up to provide assistance with home rebuilding projects for flood victims through varied jobs such as sheet rock taping, closet building or cabinet installation, painting, and more.  This type of work can be done during the week and will be prearranged with the homeowner.  Our church has been assisting a young family that is working hard to get back into their home.  The husband works during the day and only has nights and weekends to try to rebuild his home.  Any help we can provide during the week would be a tremendous help.  We are planning to have a larger work party to help this family in October, details to come.  Please contact Andy Ceperley to get involved in this very important and necessary work!

Presbyterian Coffee Project: Coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolates, raisins, and nuts continue to be available for purchase after worship and during the week during church business hours.

Charleston Trash Bag Pick-up Time Again. If you have more bags than you can use, please donate them to the church. Each year we save over $700 by using your donated bags. Thank you!

Faith In Action Volunteer Orientation Scheduled:  Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley (FIAGKV) is a local nonprofit dedicated to helping seniors in Kanawha and Putnam counties sustain their independence and remain in their own homes as long as possible. All FIAGKV volunteers are required to attend one orientation session prior to serving.  First Presby is hosting a Volunteer Orientation Training on Thursday, September 29, from 6–7:30 pm in the Activities Building Room 203.  Today’s bulletin insert has complete information related to the training.

The Cents-Ability Offering will be received next Sunday, September 25: “Speak up for people who cannot speak for themselves. Protect the rights of all who are helpless. Speak for them and be a righteous judge. Protect the rights of the poor and needy.” (Proverbs 31:8-9) The Cents-Ability effort is only a whisper, but maybe if we all whispered at once it would become audible. Don’t forget your offering next Sunday.

More About the Music: This morning’s offertory is based on a piece by Georg Friedrich Handel, the same composer who wrote the well-known oratorio, Messiah.  A passacaglia, sometimes spelled “passacalle” or “passacaile” and pronounced “pah-sah-CAH-lee-ah,” is a series of variations in triple meter, which simply means that the first of every three rhythmic pulses is strong.  (A waltz is another example of triple meter.)  This morning’s passacaglia contains ten variations, each of which is eight measures or 24 beats in length and features a different interpretation of the same musical idea.  The first few variations are the simplest, and the last several are the most ornate.  The passacaglia teaches us to take turns leading and following, and also to appreciate each other’s unique gifts, just like we do as part of the Body of Christ.

Sojourner’s Class continues to study ”Jesus and His Jewish Influences” Sunday at 9:15 a.m.,  in Room 411, Education Building. Dr. Jodi Magness gives her tenth lecture on “Apocalyptic Works and ‘The Son of Man.’”  Books such as Daniel and Enoch stress the heavenly figure of The Son of Man, who becomes prominent in the New Testament on the lips of Jesus.  What is the background, origin, and development of this important figure, for example in the Book of Revelation?

The Lay Academy of Religion begins its fall series of study sessions on Sunday, September 25, 5:30-7:00 p.m. in Room 201 in the Education Building. Dr. Andrew Newberg continues his lectures on “The Spiritual Brain: Science and Religious Experience,” followed by discussion.  Resource leader on this first meeting will be Dr. George Keller, who will lead our discussion on how Science and Religion are both different and yet both very important in our self-understanding. Free and everyone welcome. Bring a friend or neighbor.  For more information, please contact the Church Office, (304) 343-8961.
