Be a part of First Presby’s Pedal with Purpose Fundraiser on Saturday, September 17. Pedal with Purpose, presented by Zenergy Cycling, is a fundraiser to benefit Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley (FIAGKV). This stationary bike “race” is very similar to the walks and runs you may have participated in before, with a significant difference, everyone stays in one place! People of all ages and skill levels, from beginner to pro, can join in this fun, high energy event and raise funds to support the work of Faith in Action. The Faith In Action volunteers assist seniors in our community who want to stay in their own homes but need a helping hand now and then by providing FREE transportation to medical appointments or the grocery store, paying friendly visits, making weekly reassurance phone calls, or deploying a Honey Do Crew to perform minor home maintenance projects. FIAGKV impacts the quality of life of the seniors we serve in Kanawha and Putnam counties every single day. First Presby is looking to form several riding teams. Go to the Faith In Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley website to learn more and to view a video of a Zenergy class. Please notify Sue Webster ASAP if you are interested in participating. It will be a blast for a very good cause.

This Week’s Food Pantry Needs:  Meal Starters and Peanut Butter

Flood Relief Update: First Presby’s response to the call to help victims of the 2016 flood has been overwhelming and incredible! We asked for 100 backpacks filled with school supplies to provide to children and youth in the Elkview and Clendenin areas whose families lost everything in the floods. The backpacks were purchased, filled with supplies, and blessed during worship service and then delivered to St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church where they will be given out this week. We asked for 70 bed sheet sets for 70 donated beds and the sheets have poured in! Those sheet sets were blessed during worship service before being delivered to the Church of the Nazarene in Clendenin where they will be delivered with the donated beds. We asked for willing bodies and spirits to provide manual support and labor to assist with home clean-up and repair, and our second work day occurred on Saturday, July 30. We asked for monetary donations to assist the flood victims and thousands of dollars have been given. A long-term plan will be put into place to utilize those funds in the very best way possible to help WV flood victims. We asked for note cards to be written to give to people who have been affected by the floods as well as to give to those who have given of their time and talents to help counsel people who have been affected by the floods. Many notes have been written and will provide a bit of sunshine and ray of hope to the recipients. So many people have been involved in so many ways. The flood relief efforts will continue for a long time. As new needs present themselves, we will make you aware of opportunities to give and serve.

1 Corinthians 12:5-7 “There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”

Traveling this summer? Keep in touch with your church family several ways. Knitting and Crocheting- The knitting and crocheting group will be meeting on August 16, at 10:00 a.m., in room E-406. For more information, please contact Laura Ceperley.

“On the Green” Family Sign-ups: We are trying something new for our “Fellowship on the Green” after worship this summer. Our usual small groups–classes and divisions–will cover fewer Sundays for bringing refreshments. This will allow 2 or 3 families to participate together on a Sunday of their choice. Sign up on the poster in the hall or call the office to share being the hosts of “On the Green” this summer. Instructions are included. Open Sundays are September 4 and 11. There is availability on August 28 for an additional family to help out the family that has already signed up. Please take advantage of this new opportunity to share in the hospitality of First Presby this summer.

Sojourners Class invites everyone to study “Jesus and His Jewish Influences” with Dr. Jodi Magness (on DVD) who helps us get to know Jesus better.  Her topic this Sunday is the destruction of Solomon’s temple and the exile to Babylon. Come join these lively discussions.  Education Bldg. 411, 9:15 a.m. every Sunday morning.  For more information, please call Bob Newman (304) 345-0225.

More about the music: We now have an important new resource, a volume of research on every tune and text in our hymnal written by the Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D. entitled, Glory to God: A Companion.  This book contains extended articles about each text and tune in our hymnal. Here’s an excerpt from the about this morning’s opening hymn text, “In My Life:”

“In numerous interviews, the author/composer [Bob Kilpatrick, b. 1952] has recounted how he wrote this song while sitting alone on a Saturday afternoon in his mother-in-law’s living room in Atwater, California.  His intention was to create a simple prayer-song that he and his wife, Cindy, could use as their personal prayer and preparation for concerts…. When his wife came into the room and heard it, she suggested that they use it at the Castle Air Force Base chapel, where they were to sing the next day.  Within a week the song went overseas with a friend, and within a year it had been to every continent in the world.”

For more fun tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of the Companion in our church library or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

Please pray for the FPC Lyres Club as we minister in music to the residents of Charleston Gardens this Tuesday, August 9.  Gig Sheet 96 has been emailed to all harp players; hard copies are on the table in the hallway.

Look for the big map on the bulletin board in the hallway! Whenever you travel, bring home a bulletin from the churches you visit, and we’ll “map” you on the board. By the end of the summer, our board will be full, and we’ll be connected to brothers and sisters all over the world! Leave your travel bulletins in the church office, and be sure to include your name!
