Be a part of First Presby’s Pedal with Purpose Fundraiser on Saturday, September 17. Pedal with Purpose, presented by Zenergy Cycling, is a fundraiser to benefit Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley (FIAGKV). This stationary bike “race” is very similar to the walks and runs you may have participated in before, with a significant difference, everyone stays in one place! People of all ages and skill levels, from beginner to pro, can join in this fun, high energy event and raise funds to support the work of Faith in Action. The Faith In Action volunteers assist seniors in our community who want to stay in their own homes but need a helping hand now and then by providing FREE transportation to medical appointments or the grocery store, paying friendly visits, making weekly reassurance phone calls, or deploying a Honey Do Crew to perform minor home maintenance projects. FIAGKV impacts the quality of life of the seniors we serve in Kanawha and Putnam counties every single day. First Presby is looking to form several riding teams. Go to the Faith In Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley website to learn more and to view a video of a Zenergy class. Please notify Sue Webster ASAP if you are interested in participating. It will be a blast for a very good cause.

This Week’s Food Pantry Needs:  Dry or Canned Milk, Peanut Butter

Flood Relief Update:  First Presby’s response to the call to help victims of the 2016 flood has been overwhelming and incredible! We asked for 100 backpacks filled with school supplies to provide to children and youth in the Elkview and Clendenin areas whose families lost everything in the floods. The backpacks were purchased, filled with supplies, and will be blessed during worship service and then delivered to St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church where they will be given out this week. We asked for 70 bed sheet sets for 70 donated beds and the sheets have poured in! Those sheet sets will be blessed during worship service before being delivered to the Church of the Nazarene in Clendenin where they will be delivered with the donated beds. We asked for willing bodies and spirits to provide manual support and labor to assist with home clean-up and repair, and our second work day occurred on Saturday, July 30. We asked for monetary donations to assist the flood victims and thousands of dollars have been given. A long-term plan will be put into place to utilize those funds in the very best way possible to help WV flood victims. We asked for note cards to be written to give to people who have been affected by the floods as well as to give to those who have given of their time and talents to help counsel people who have been affected by the floods. Many notes have been written and will provide a bit of sunshine and ray of hope to the recipients. So many people have been involved in so many ways. The flood relief efforts will continue for a long time. As new needs present themselves, we will make you aware of opportunities to give and serve.

1 Corinthians 12:5-7 “There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”

Manna Meal Sandwich Making Next Sunday- The Elementary Sunday School Children (former Covenant Kids) will be making 200 sandwiches next Sunday during the Sunday School Hour. Adults are always welcome to help with this project and to help deliver the sandwiches and fruit to Manna Meals. Meet in the chapel at 9:15 a.m.

It’s Time to Re-enroll in Kroger Community Rewards. If you have enrolled your Plus Card for Kroger to donate to First Presby, you MUST re-enroll it during the month of August. During the first half of 2016 Kroger donated over $3,000 to First Presby, with each quarter’s gift growing as more members enrolled their Plus Cards. If you are a Kroger shopper and have not yet enrolled your card, now is the perfect time to do so at www.kroger.com to help grow our ministry.

Traveling this summer? Keep in touch with your church family several ways. You can participate in Sunday worship – the service is broadcast on the WCHS 580AM radio website at 11:00 a.m. Check out our website, http://firstpresby.com/ to read the weekly announcements and the bulletin, download past sermons to listen at your convenience. You can log in to the website as a member and set up a recurring gift directly from your checking account or credit card to continue supporting your church ministries while away. Members can also find contact info for other church family members in the member portal. Find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/FirstPresbyCharleston to see photos of the latest happenings. Stay in touch this summer- we’ll miss you when you’re not here!

Knitting and Crocheting- The knitting and crocheting group will be meeting on August 2, at 6:00 p.m., at the home of Laura Ceperley, and August 16, at 10:00 a.m. in room E-406. For more information, please contact Laura Ceperley.

Electronic Giving- Did you know that we can easily set up a recurring gift to the church directly from your checking or savings account? This can easily be done on our church website. Also, you can offer your financial gift to God electronically by scanning the QR code on the laminated card in the pew racks. These cards can also be placed in the offering plate as a sign of your faith and trust in God.

“On the Green” Family Sign-ups- We are trying something new for our “Fellowship on the Green” after worship this summer. Our usual small groups–classes and divisions–will cover fewer Sundays for bringing refreshments. This will allow 2 or 3 families to participate together on a Sunday of their choice. Sign up on the poster in the hall or call the office to share being the hosts of “On the Green” this summer. Instructions are included. Open Sundays are September 4 and 11. Please take advantage of this new opportunity to share in the hospitality of First Presby this summer.

Look for the big map on the bulletin board in the hallway! Whenever you travel, bring home a bulletin from the churches you visit, and we’ll “map” you on the board. By the end of the summer, our board will be full, and we’ll be connected to brothers and sisters all over the world! Leave your travel bulletins in the church office, and be sure to include your name!

More about the music: We now have an important new resource, a volume of research on every tune and text in our hymnal written by the Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D. entitled, Glory to God: A Companion.  This book contains extended articles about each text and tune in our hymnal. Here’s an excerpt from the about this morning’s middle hymn text, “Brethren, We Have Met to Worship:”

“Several significant biblical references can be found in this text.  The central one is the story of the provision of manna for the Israelites in the desert…The reference to Miriam, Moses’ sister, can be identified as Exodus 15:20-21. ‘That he will be found’ in 2.6 is an appropriation of Isaiah 55:6. The ‘trembling jailer’ reference in 3.1 connects with the story of Paul and Silas in Acts 16:23-33.  The ‘weeping Mary’ allusion can be regarded as continuing the traditional association of Mary Magdalene with the story in Luke 7:36-39, 44-50 [our scripture for this morning]; or it can be treated as a reference to Mary of Bethany, based on the versions in Matthew 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; and John 12:1-8.”

For more fun tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of the Companion in our church library or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

Study Continues for Sojourner’s Class- Jesus was Jewish before he was a Christian. Or maybe it is truer to say Jesus was Jewish before he became the Christ. Sojourner’s Class is studying the Jewish origins and background for Jesus and his career as the founder of Christianity. Lecturer is Dr. Jodi Magness, whose expert knowledge stimulates lively discussion. Sojourners meet at 9:15 a.m. Sunday mornings, Education Bldg., room E-411.  Everyone welcome. For more information, please call Bob Newman, (304) 345-0225.
