The cross on the chancel is made from three Christmas trees. It symbolizes the connection between cradle and cross as we celebrate the gift of God’s Son and His sacrifice for our salvation.

Reminder That the Church Buildings Are Closed Monday, May 29, for Memorial Day

Next Week’s Sermon is “The Perseverance of the Saints” by Bill McCoy. Sermon Text: John 10:22-30.

Sympathy of the Congregation is extended to the family of Judy Keller on her death, May 20.

Many Ways to Support our Ministries: In addition to traditional cash and checks in the offering plate, you can give on our website firstpresby.com via your computer or smart phone, through our mobile app “Church Life” (you must first set up a user profile on our website to use the Church Life app.) or by texting 73256 and typing “firstpresby” in the message line. Use the QR code card in your pew rack to go directly to our giving page. God loves a Cheerful Giver.

Ruffner Room Refreshments: Beginning this Sunday please join us in the Ruffner Room following the worship service for a time of Fellowship and Refreshments. We will have lemonade, water, and coffee. What should be done then, my friends? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation.Let all things be done for building up. 1 Corinthians 14:26

The Cents-Ability Offering is Received Today: Cents-Ability originated in 1976 as “Two-Cents-A-Meal,” a project begun by Presbyterian Women to involve individuals and families in a corporate response to world hunger. Together we can help local organizations help those who need it the most.

Barefoot Sunday is June 11! This is the day that you are invited to come to church in bare feet to walk in solidarity with those who daily have to walk with no covering or protection for their feet. This is also the day that you bring an offering of shoes in support of those who do not have shoes. This year, First Presby is partnering with Free Your Footwear, a branch of Bridge Ministries, Inc. that is working with domestic and international organizations to help collect, refurbish and distribute gently used or new shoes to those in need worldwide. Millions of people worldwide go without basic needs every day, like footwear. Having this lack of shoes can lead to feelings of rejection and worthlessness and also exposes the individual to tremendous health risks. Receiving a gift of shoes is a way to signify importance and a feeling of being loved. Be one of the first to stop by the bulletin board in our church hallway to select your Barefoot card and commit to purchase a new pair of shoes for a child in need. Or select a card to make a financial donation to support the work of Free Your Footwear. Instructions for participation are on the bulletin board or contact Sue Webster for more information.

This Week’s Food Pantry Needs: Peanut Butter & Rice

Wear Red to Church for Pentecost next Sunday, June 4!  The Worship Division invites you to celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the church with us next Sunday by wearing red or other fiery colors to worship next Sunday.  Red is the liturgical color for Pentecost.

Join the Family Choir this Summer!  On Family Choir Sundays, we meet in the Choir Room at 9:30 a.m. to learn the anthem for 10:30 a.m. worship.  We’re a different group each time, determined by the people who are in town on a given Sunday.  This summer’s Family Choir dates are June 11, June 25, July 9 and July 16, so mark your calendars now and plan to sing with us.  All ages are welcome.

More about the Music: Below is an excerpt from “Glory to God: A Companion” about  this morning’s middle hymn, “Fight the Good Fight”:  “Based on 1 Timothy 6:12, this text first appeared under the title ‘The Fight of Faith’ in the author’s collection, ‘Hymns of Love and Praise for the Church’s Year’ (London, 1863). The opening line has often been misunderstood as a military image but is actually an athletic one, drawn from a Greek verb meaning ‘struggle’ or ‘grapple’ or ‘wrestle.’  The second half of the first line is perhaps a recollection of Ecclesiastes 9:10a.  The sports context continues in later stanzas reflecting the experience of a runner (recalling 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 and Hebrews 12:1-2).  Each stanza here contains two imperatives, each connected to a rationale or a promise for each action or attitude. This self-contained quality, coupled with the simple and straightforward language, has doubtless contributed to the appeal of this text over many years.”  For more tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of “Glory to God: A Companion” by Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D in our church library, or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

First Presby Playgroup: Mothers, and children up to fifth  grade, are invited to join the First Presby Playgroup for our very first playdate. We will meet at 10:00 a.m., June 5 at the Splash Pad at Magic Island. If you have any questions, contact Anne Moses, 304-549-6189

The Christian Education office is looking for a used/old toaster oven. It will be used in Art camps and Vacation Bible School (VBS) for baking clay and shrink dinks. Contact Janet Chambers 304-343-8961.

Hot Dog Sunday: On June 11, Barefoot Sunday, you are invited to join Fellowship and Recreation and Mission in the Dining Room following worship for our annual Hot Dog Sunday.

Mark Your Calendar: Save this date, June 21, when The Lay Academy sponsors “Summer Poetry Club,” in Room A203 in the Activities Building from 5:30-7:00 p.m. and continuing for eight weeks.  Do you do original poetry? Come and share with us.  Do you have favorite poets?  Come and share their poetry with us.  Dr. Peter L. Marty, Editor/Publisher of The Christian Century magazine, says, “Poetry cleanses by telling the truth.  At least good poetry does. It tells the truth through an economy of words, and by naming difficult and often inaccessible feelings. The late Jane Kenyon lifted up the artist’s task in this way: “The poet’s job is to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth, in such a beautiful way that people cannot live without it.” Everyone is welcome. For more information, please contact the Church Office, 304 343-8961.

Members of Military: If you, a family member, or friend are in any branch of military, we would love you honor you by adding you to our military bulletin board. Please send the following information to vannessa@firstpresby.com: name, rank, branch, where you are stationed, and a photo of you in your uniform. We would love to have every one of our service men and women on our board! God bless you and thank you for serving our country!

Live on the Levee: Starting on Friday, June 2 at 5:45 p.m. Fellowship and Recreation are hosting a light dinner in the Dining Room. The light dinners will be held the first and third Fridays of June, July and August. If you are attending Live on the Levee consider joining us in a time of fellowship prior to the event.

Walking Community! Join us for a weekly walk on Mondays at 5:30 p.m. We meet in the parking lot by the activities building for a one hour walk and time of fellowship. If the weather is good we walk outside, and if it is poor we walk in the Activities Building. This is a great way to jump start your week with some exercise and time for reflection. But we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever. Micah 4:5.

Flood Recovery Continues: The historic 2016 floods of West Virginia left many people displaced and homeless.  First Presby was boots on the ground immediately following the flood, specifically in the Clendenin and Elkview area.  We provided assistance in many ways and ultimately partnered with one family to help rebuild their home so that they could move back into their fully restored home prior to the holidays. There is still much to do and First Presby is committed to being a part of the flood recovery process for the long haul.  As a church community, we will seek ways to engage our congregation to continue in the rebuilding process. Our church has a long-standing relationship with WV Ministry of Advocacy & Workcamps, Inc.  (WVMAW), which is a Christian ministry supported in part by PC(USA) that offers the opportunity for discipleship by partnering with those in need whose lives have been devastated by natural disasters or by the disaster of poverty in areas of West Virginia. WVMAW has many opportunities to serve in flood recovery throughout the state and specifically close to home in the Clendenin area.  All skill levels are needed.  If interested in giving of your time and talent to help rebuild homes and lives, please contact Sue Webster for more details – 304-343-8961.

Sign up today to be a part of First Presby Work Days-June 9 and 10 (work one or both days, whatever fits your schedule): This project will help repair the home of a decorated Vietnam-era Marine who was awarded 10 commendations throughout his career. He has spent his entire life taking care of others including being an active volunteer in the local Toys for Tots Program. He is currently waiting for a lung transplant and while he has been waiting his home has become uninhabitable. One of the projects that we will execute on June 9 and 10 is to build a wheelchair ramp. All supplies and instructions will be provided–we simply need your man/womanpower!  Additional opportunities on June 9 and 10 may include lawn/yard care, cleaning, painting, kitchen installation, flooring, insulation, pressure washing. Volunteers needed to prepare and provide lunch. Please consider giving some of your time on June 9 and/or 10 to help. See Sue Webster in the main church hallway today after worship service to sign up – complete instructions for the work days will be provided by Sue and/or Andy Ceperley once you have signed up.
