Sunday Worship 10:30 a.m.

Worship is broadcast at 11:00 a.m. on WCHS-580AM

304-343-8961

The cross on the chancel is made from three Christmas trees. It symbolizes the connection between cradle and cross as we celebrate the gift of God’s Son and His sacrifice for our salvation.

Next Week’s Sermon is “Be Devoted to One Another” by Bill McCoy. Gospel lesson is Romans 12:9-21.

Congratulations to Naomi Krieg on the birth of great grandson, Michael Paul Thompson III, born to Michael and Caroline in Nashville on January 22, 2017.

Lenten Memorials:  Envelopes are in the pew racks for contributions to our Worship Memorial Fund in honor or memory of loved ones. Names will be printed in a special insert for the Easter worship bulletins. The deadline for submission is April 9. These Lenten Memorials are given to enrich worship at the church.

Many Ways to Support our Ministries: In addition to traditional cash and checks in the offering plate, you can give on our website firstpresby.com via your computer or smart phone, through our mobile app “Church Life” (you must first set up a user profile on our website to use the Church Life app.) or by texting 73256 and typing “firstpresby” in the message line. Use the QR code card in your pew rack to go directly to our giving page. God loves a Cheerful Giver.

Easter Egg Celebration today, from 2:00-4:00 p.m.in the Recreation Room. All ages are invited to join us for Easter crafts, egg dyeing, Easter egg hunt, fun games, and more! For more information, contact Janet Chambers.

The LAY ACADEMY continues to study “The Addictive Brain” today in the Dining Room, 4:00-5:30 p.m. Dr. Thad Polk lectures (DVD) on what Science tells us about two of the most widely used, legally sold drugs across the world, Caffeine and Nicotine. Caffeine, consumed daily by eighty to ninety percent of Americans in coffee or other sources is the most widely used psychoactive drug in the world.  While caffeine behaves like other more serious psychoactive drugs, it is much less toxic and offers many positive benefits. Nicotine, on the other hand, is highly dangerous.  Nicotine smoke contains thousands of toxic substances, including more than fifty chemicals known to cause cancer. This drug is highly addictive and exceedingly difficult to shake off.  Everyone is invited to join us to learn more. Call the church office for more information.

Youth Group will meet this evening at our normal time, 6:00-8:30 p.m. The only change is that we will be meeting at Rock Lake Presbyterian. Contact Payne if you have questions.

This Week’s Food Pantry Needs: Peanut Butter and Soups

Manna Meal Sandwich Making Thanks: Thanks to the Elementary Sunday School Children and adult helpers who made 200 sandwiches during the Sunday School Hour this morning. The sandwiches and fruit were delivered to Manna Meal by the students.

Children for Chicks Challenge! Our Elementary age children are participating in a mission outreach project termed Children for Chicks Challenge!  During the Lenten season, the children will bring their offerings to Chapel time on Sunday mornings and work together to collect funds to buy a family of chickens for as many families in need as possible. Make sure to stop by the Children for Chicks Challenge bulletin board in the main church hallway to see how the chicks are multiplying and traveling down the hallway! The gifts given by the elementary age children and our congregation have now totaled over $1,750.00!! This equals 351 chicks!!  The elementary children will continue the Children for Chicks Challenge through Easter Sunday, so continue to give and continue to watch the bulletin board fill up with chicks. One family of chickens costs $25.00, individual chicks cost $5.00 each. The offerings received for this challenge will be sent to PC(USA) to enable World Mission to purchase a family of chicks (5 chicks) for people in need of a sustainable source of good nutrition. To participate, simply stop by the Children for Chicks Challenge bulletin board located in the main hallway. Select a chick, write your name on it and put it along with your offering in the provided chick envelope. Take your envelope to the front office and a staff member will add your chick(s) to the flock on the bulletin board. Let us all do our part to help our Elementary Children help their brothers and sisters throughout the world!

Geneva Choir for youth and adults’ welcomes sopranos, altos, tenors, basses, and everyone in between. No prior musical experience is required; just a servant heart and a sense of humor. We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the Choir Room at the top of the stairs above the Susie Early Room.  Come sing with us!

Sojourners’ Class has begun a new series of studies on Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m. in Room 411 in the Education Building. This new study series is called “Painting the Stars” and explores the promise of evolutionary Christian spirituality, investigating how our faith can grow when we are open and willing to listen for new wisdom and guidance from the Spirit who invites us to step out into new surprising and exciting dimensions of love for God and each other. These lessons will help us to support the work of our Session’s Strategic Planning Group. Everyone is invited and welcome to share these learning experiences.

More About the Music: This morning’s middle hymn, “The Old Rugged Cross” is often requested by First Presby members and is especially appropriate when our own rugged cross stands on our chancel during Lent. “The Old Rugged Cross” was written in 1913 by coal miner, Salvation Army worker, and Methodist evangelist George Bennard (1873-1958). It was first offered to God in worship at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Pokagon, Michigan, accompanied by a pianist and a violinist.  It became much-beloved when Homer Rodeheaver, song leader for evangelist Billy Sunday, began using it regularly in Sunday’s revival services. Of his most famous song, George Bennard wrote, “I saw the Christ of the cross as if I were seeing John 3:16 leave the printed page, take form, and act out the meaning of redemption.”  The music in your bulletin was reprinted from a songbook so old that it still carries a 1913 copyright information beneath the title line. An “old rugged copy” may be more appropriate for this particular song than a newly-minted one, but don’t worry–“The Old Rugged Cross” is now comfortably in the public domain.

New Walking Community! Join us for a weekly walk on Mondays at 5:30 pm. We’ll meet in the parking lot by the Activities Building for a one hour walk and time of fellowship. If the weather is good we will walk outside, and if it is poor we will walk in the Activities Building. This is a great way to jump start your week with some exercise and time for reflection. But we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever. Micah 4:5.

Thanks to Our Child Care Volunteers today in our nursery, toddler and preschool rooms. All child care rooms are equipped with live video feeds of the worship service. Do you love children and babies? Call the church office,304-343-8961, to volunteer in this special ministry.

Act of Faith: We are reminded that all we have comes from God.  Please remember to name the First Presbyterian Church as a beneficiary of your will, your retirement plan or of a life insurance policy in order that we may carry out God’s wishes and continue his work in our community and in the world.
