Mission Outreach

First Presby is blessed with a rich history of mission outreach both on a local and global scale. Our foundation and fabric is built on being faithful to God’s command to “love our neighbor as ourselves.” We do this through hands-on ministry and financial support. We are honored to partner with agencies and people who work tirelessly to provide help and hope to those in need. There are many opportunities locally and globally to serve and engage your heart in the name of Christ.

Local Missions

Hope Village

First Presby’s Fair Trade Boutique full of unique, handcrafted items from all around the world! Fulfill your Christmas shopping needs while helping sustain artisans and their families.

Barefoot Sunday

During a special Sunday in June, congregation members are encouraged to come to church with bare feet and bring an offering of new shoes to benefit a group of people that cannot afford new shoes.

Manna Meal Sandwich Making

On the first Sunday of each month, the children’s Sunday School classes come together in the Dining Room to make and deliver 300 sandwiches to Manna Meal.

Scatter to Serve Workdays

The Mission Division proudly kicked off the first First Presby Scatter to Serve Workday on April 21. Volunteers met in the Dining Room for a delicious breakfast prepared by the Presbyterian Women, then the captain of each project gathered their troops and scattered throughout the community to work at five local organizations. These projects included: Cleaning up four community gardens, light construction, removing debris, mulching, planting flowers, canvas painting and baking pepperoni rolls.

We hope to have many more Scatter to Serve Workdays in the future. Stay tuned for updates!

Presbyterian Coffee Project

The Presbyterian Coffee Project offers a special link between congregations and communities around the world. Churches can now reach out to neighbors overseas not only with the prayers and offerings we give but with the goods and products we purchase. Spearheaded by Linda Elliot, the Presbyterian Coffee Project in First Presby is the leading church in sale in the nation. Buying fair trade through the Presbyterian Coffee Project ensures that more of the money we spend on our favorite treats reaches the hardworking farmers who actually grow it. Coffee, tea, nuts, chocolates and more are available Monday through Friday in the main church from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Angel Tree Youth Ministry

The purpose of Angel Tree is to provide children with Christmas gifts on behalf of their parents who are in prison. Many times, children may feel forgotten or abandoned by the parent that has been incarcerated. Angel Tree helps to show these children that not only are they not forgotten, but they are loved. They are loved by their absent parent and also by the people who provide and deliver their special gifts. For our First Presby youth and families, Angel Tree provides the opportunity to become God’s hands and feet to His precious children. We can live the gospel each Christmas through the simple act of giving a gift.

Light Up the Levee

What a better way to ring in the Christmas cheer and spread the message of Christmas than to gather at the Kanawha River, Haddad Riverfront Park, to sing carols and bring canned food items to donate to the Covenant House Food Pantry? Sponsored by First Presby, this community-wide event is complete with musical talent, sing-along booklets and hot chocolate! A truck is on hand to accept your food donations. Check our calendar towards the beginning of December to find out the date!

Covenant House Food Pantry

The Covenant House Food Pantry is dedicated to helping those who cannot afford to buy food for their families. We can always use your help by either volunteering or donating food. First Presby has the great honor of hosting the Food Pantry on our campus and having a standing relationship with them for the last 30 years.

Faith In Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley

First Presby is proud to partner with Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley (FIAGKV). Faith in Action’s Honey Do Crew is a volunteer organization to help seniors stay in their housing by providing minor repairs, painting, yard work, safety and other maintenance related duties. Our volunteers come primarily from contractors and several churches in Kanawha and Putnam counties. First Presbyterian Church provides volunteers for many work projects throughout the year with two “Scatter to Serve” Mission Division project work days in the spring and fall. This spring, the First Presby Mission Division completed three projects while providing 15 volunteers working a total of nearly fifty hours with more projects planned for the fall. First Presbyterian Church is a corner stone church for Faith in action. We have many  members who volunteer their services to help the elderly in our community through faith in action. Global Missions

First Presbyterian Church is blessed to support the work of our Global Mission Co-Workers and organizations. It is our honor to provide financial, communications and prayer support to our extended church family who works selflessly to bring help and hope to those who are at risk or have been treated unjustly in our world.

Champions for Children

In partnership with Vision Trust International, individuals and Sunday School classes sponsor children who reside in Ayacucho, Peru. The mission of Vision Trust is to bring hope to the world’s neediest children by providing thoughtful interventions like safe water, nutritious food, healthcare, spiritual mentoring, and education, thereby together we can end the cycle of poverty and see these children live for God and love others.  There are ongoing opportunities to sponsor a child or donate to the Vision Trust program.

Children for Positive Change

Our elementary age members participate in bringing aide to people worldwide thru a partnership with the PC (USA) Alternative Gift program.  During the season of Lent, we raise money to purchase sustainable nutrition such a chicks or piglets.  This program allows our youngest members an opportunity to participate in mission outreach and grow in their love and understanding of all God’s children throughout the world.
