Use the QR code card in your pew rack to go directly to our giving page. God loves a Cheerful Giver.

Sundae Sunday: Please join us in the dining room after worship today for ice cream sundaes. We will also have cold cut sandwiches and chips to make it a lunch.

Youth Group: Our first meeting of the school year is tonight from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.in the Dining Room. If you or your child is in 6th-12th grade we welcome you to join us. Dinner will be served.

Boy Scout Troop 5 will be having an open house kick-off picnic on Tuesday, August 22 at Kanawha State Forest in Shelter #9 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  All families with boys ages 11 to 18 are invited to come and learn about the advantages of scouting.  Come and enjoy an evening of fun and fellowship; learn about planned activities for the 2017-2018 program year.  If you have questions concerning scouting, please contact Scoutmaster Blair Taylor at 304-345-9960.

LOGOS: Attention all students, 4 years old – 12th Grade, and Parents. LOGOS begins this Wednesday! THIS IS EARLIER THAN IN THE PAST. We meet every week from August 23rd until November 29th, except the week of Thanksgiving. Every Wednesday the children and youth will have Recreation, Worship Skills, Bible Study, and a family style dinner. We start each session at 5:00 p.m. and end at 7:15 p.m. for children through 5th grade, and end at 7:30 p.m. for middle and high school youth.

Youth Sunday School:  Youth Sunday School will begin on Rally Day, September 10.

Trash Bags: Many thanks to all who have contributed trash bags in the past. With the increased use of the church buildings for meetings, our supply of trash bags needs to be replenished. Any extra  you can donate to the church would be much appreciated. Please leave in the church office.

This Week’s Food Pantry Needs: Cereal & Peanut Butter

If You Enjoyed Singing or listening to the offerings of the Family Choir this summer, pray and ask the Lord if this is your year to become part of the Geneva Choir.  Music literacy and perfect attendance are not required, but a sense of humor is certainly helpful.  God needs singers of all voice types and levels of experience, and you will receive the gift of community in the Choir Room.  Rehearsals will begin on Thursday, September 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Traveling this Summer? Take a First Presby “Greeting Card” with you to drop into the offering plate of the church you visit on vacation. You will find these wallet-size blue cards inside the Friendship Pads, and on the “Bulletin” bulletin board in the hallway. Then bring home a worship bulletin, leave it in the church office (be sure to include your name!), and we’ll “map” you on the bulletin board.

More About the Music: Below is an excerpt from “Glory to God: A Companion” about this morning’s middle hymn, “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”:  “This tune, reportedly written when the composer was twenty years old, appeared with about forty other of his tunes in the collection [Select Hymns: with Tunes Annext (London,1761)]. It was sung with a variety of texts in Wales but seems not to have been known in England until it was included in the Wesleyan Conference Methodist Hymn-Book (London, 1904). Much more use and appreciation followed its appearance in the English Hymnal, where it was provided as the setting for two texts, ‘Alleluia, Sing to Jesus’ and James Russell Lowell’s ‘Once to Every Man and Nation.’ The Welsh tune name (pronounced huv-rud-ol) is variously translated as ‘melodious, delightful, pleasant.’” For more tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of “Glory to God: A Companion” by Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div., Ph.D in our church library, or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.

West Virginia Interfaith Refugee Ministry (“WVIRM”) is an organization of volunteers from many faith communities in Charleston WV, whose mission is striving to improve the lives of refugees.  In preparation of two families that will come to Charleston in November, volunteers are needed to teach English as a second language to incoming refugees.  An ESL training course is being offered on August 18th and 19th (Friday evening and all day Saturday). It is free and sponsored by the Literacy Volunteers of Kanawha County. The training will be at the YWCA “Angel Place” which is behind Piedmont Elementary.  It covers Culture Shock, Language Learning, Vocabulary, Dialogues, Listening, Pronunciation, Grammar, Reading, Writing, and Lesson Planning.  If you are interested in this opportunity to provide help and hope to arriving refugees, please contact Sue Webster.

Opportunities to Engage!  WV Health Right has two fundraising events in which they are requesting volunteers.  “Be a Super Hero, Save a Life” 5K walk/run September 9 – help with registration and race route duties.  Also – “Your Passport to International Cuisine, Wine & Music” Annual WV Health Right Fundraiser September 22, eight people who are comfortable with on-line technology are needed to help with the on-line silent auction, your volunteer time provides you with a ticket to the event ($100.00 value)  For more information contact Sue Webster.

Cents-Ability Offering is Received Next Sunday:  Cents-Ability is a partnership of Christian faith, compassion, and the simple action of setting aside a few cents each meal to be used to provide food for hungry people.  The offering is undergirded with prayer and reminds the giver of the importance of sharing our lives and gifts with others.  Cents-Ability is a program for everyone – adults, youth and children.  This is an opportunity for every family member to respond to the needs of the hungry.  Isaiah 58:10  If you give of your own food to feed those who are hungry and to satisfy the needs of those who are humble, then your light will rise in the dark and your darkness will become as bright as the noonday sun.

Live on the Levee: Thank you to everyone who attended our Live on the Levee Tailgates. We enjoyed it and hope to see you all next summer.

Local Mission Grant Applications: Through the very generous pledge and plate offerings by you, the First Presbyterian Congregation, local mission outreach grant requests are able to be funded annually.  First Presby has a very long and rich history of supporting local non-profit agencies/organizations that work to promote a better quality of life for those in need in our community. The grant process is such that local/state agencies submit their application to First Presby’s Mission Division.  A subcommittee of the Mission Division reviews the grants following a best practices set of guidelines and makes recommendation to Session regarding funding. If you know of or have an association with a 501c3 organization that would qualify to submit a grant application, please make them aware of this opportunity. The grant applications for 2018 funding will be available in the church hallway on the information table beginning September 1 and/or online at www.firstpresby.com.  All applications are due on or before Friday, September 29, 2017.  Please contact Sue Webster if you have any questions.

It’s Time to Re-enroll in Kroger Community Rewards. If you have enrolled your Plus Card for Kroger to donate to First Presby, you MUST re-enroll it during the month of August. Since becoming part of this Rewards Program in 2015, Kroger has donated over $9,000 to First Presby, with each quarter’s gift growing as more members enrolled their Plus Cards. If you are a Kroger shopper and have not yet enrolled your card, now is the perfect time to do so at www.kroger.com to help grow our ministry.  If you need help enrolling or re-enrolling, stop by the church office and Kay Propst will be glad to get you enrolled.

Church League Basketball: Attendance for Church League Basketball will start in September. If a student wants to be eligible to play they need to attend Church, Sunday School, and/or Youth Group at least twice a month (not on the same day). If your child is interested in playing, or you are interested in coaching/helping please send Payne Warner an email at youth@firstpresby.com.

The Lay Academy will continue to host Poetry Readings  August 23 and August 30 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in Room 203 in the  Activities Building.  August 30 will be the last meeting this summer. On September 3, the new class on “Comparative Religions” will begin a series of twelve meetings at 4:00 p.m. in the Dining Room. Everyone invited to learn more about all of the Great Religions and how this knowledge and understanding will help us “to love our neighbor as ourself,” as Jesus teaches us to do.
