A New Experience in a

Global Marketplace

Christ told His disciples, “Whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave” (Matt. 20:26-27).

As disciples, we at First Presby have an upcoming opportunity to serve farmers and artisans in vulnerable living conditions, who often depend on our business to support their families and communities.

How do their situations call us to serve? How does supporting them involve shopping? Can buying jewelry, toys, beautiful pieces for your home, or even items from a Christmas list be serving the Lord? The answer is “yes.”

In October our church will bring to Charleston a market of fairly traded goods from all over the world. Whether you are shopping for yourself or for others, the Global Marketplace will make it easy to find meaningful special gifts. Also,  perhaps most importantly, it allows us to provide the people who make the goods with a life of  hope and dignity, instead of poverty.

Among the vendors at the event will be Ten Thousand Villages, an organization which helps artisans market their products while preserving their traditions. This Fair Trade vendor welcomes you to “invite the world into your life, express yourself with worldly flair, the uncommon colors, shapes and textures you’ll discover at Ten Thousand Villages let you make a statement that’s all your own.” You will not want to miss the beautiful handmade scarves and baskets while they are in town.

Another organization coming in October is Import Peace, created by a group of missionaries who came back from a Presbyterian Women gathering determined to provide economic relief to Palestinian Farmers. Import Peace sells only top grade products made from late season  olives, which are organically grown, freshly picked, and hand pressed, resulting in “outrageously flavorful” extra virgin olive oil.

Mayan Works organization will bring us beautiful, colorful textiles in the form of towels, gift bags and table runners as well as gorgeous jewelry and shawls.

In addition Equal Exchange will have coffees and chocolates on hand with samples available!

From East Africa through African Team Ministries, you’ll find fabulous jewelry and wood carvings.

Bring your family and friends to the Global Marketplace starting with an international supper in the Dining Room on Wednesday, October 21.

We also welcome you to attend the Shepherd’s Center Luncheon on Thursday, October 22.

Bring children on Saturday! There will be activities for them to enjoy while adults are free to shop!

Make your meal reservations by October 19. For the Wednesday Connections International Supper call the Church Office at (304) 343-8961. For Shepherd’s Center luncheon call (304) 545-1743.
